Patrick Mahomes Trolls Travis Kelce as Texas Tech Avoids Cincinnati's Upset Bid

Scott PolacekSep 29, 2024

While much of the college football world was dialed into the Alabama and Georgia showdown Saturday night, two NFL legends were locked in on Texas Tech playing Cincinnati.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes played collegiately for the Red Raiders and didn't miss a chance to talk some trash to his favorite target and former Bearcats tight end, Travis Kelce:

Texas Tech escaped with a 44-41 victory in the back-and-forth contest because Cincinnati kicker Nathan Hawks missed a 51-yard field goal that would have forced overtime as time expired.

Kelce couldn't believe it:

It was a game that offensive stars like Mahomes and Kelce surely loved, as the two teams combined for 85 points in the Big 12 battle. Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby threw for 426 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, while Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks accounted for 172 yards and two scores on the ground.

Red Raiders quarterback Behren Morton also threw for 251 yards, two touchdowns and zero picks.

Texas Tech is now 4-1 on the campaign, although the schedule gets more difficult moving forward with games against Arizona, Iowa State, Colorado and Oklahoma State. As for Cincinnati, it is 3-2 and still faces difficult challenges against UCF, Colorado, Iowa State and Kansas State.

While Mahomes has bragging rights over his tight end, they would surely both trade a win from their alma maters for another victory on Sunday.

The Chiefs are 3-0 to start the season after wins over the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons. Their first AFC West game of the season is Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, and Kelce will be looking for his first impressive individual performance of the 2024 campaign.

The future Hall of Famer has just eight catches for 69 yards and zero touchdowns through three games and hasn't quite looked like himself in terms of individual performances. Perhaps a matchup against the Chargers is exactly what he needs, though, as he posted 12 catches for 179 yards and one touchdown in a win over the division rival last year.

A touchdown or two might help him get over the Bearcats loss as well.
