Malik Willis Will Be Packers' QB1 vs. Colts If Jordan Love Can't Play Due to Injury
Malik Willis is the next man up in Green Bay.
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LeFleur told reporters on Monday that Willis would be the team's starting quarterback for Week 2 if Jordan Love is not cleared. Sean Clifford would move to the backup role.
LaFleur noted, via ESPN's Adam Schefter, that the Packers are not planning to put Love on injured reserve, signaling that the incumbent starter could be back within the next four weeks.
Love sustained a knee injury during the final drive of the Packers Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil.
Love's injury has been diagnosed as a MCL sprain and he is expected to be out for three-to-six weeks. While bringing in another quarterback could have been appealing, seeing what Green Bay has in Willis also makes some sense.
Willis was a second-round pick in 2022 by the Tennessee Titans and he has appeared in 12 games in his career. He has a 1-2 record and has thrown for 350 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions in his limited action.
He was traded to the Packers on August 26 and was placed ahead of Clifford as the team's backup. While Green Bay certainly doesn't like having to rely on him already, his dual-threat ability and past pedigree makes him an intriguing development option for the team.
The Packers will host the Colts in Week 2 and hope Willis can help the team avoid a dreaded 0-2 start.
