Bold Predictions for 49ers' Individual Stat Leaders in 2024 NFL Season

Alex BallentineAug 28, 2024

The San Francisco 49ers are all geared up for another run at the Super Bowl in 2024. A lot of that has to do with the sheer amount of star power the 49ers front office has assembled over the years.

The Niners have one of the best collections of elite players in the league. The trio of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle is tough to beat. Christian McCaffrey remains the most dangerous running back in the game and the defense is still anchored by Nick Bosa and Fred Warner.

With all that star power, simply leading the Niners in any statistical category is going to take a great season.

As we head into the new season, here are a few bold predictions for those who are going to lead the way for San Francisco this season.

Christian McCaffrey Falls Short of 2,000 Yards

Christian McCaffrey is the most dangerous running back in football going into the season. He's going No. 1 in a lot of fantasy football drafts for a reason and Kyle Shanahan clearly loves building gameplans around the running back.

But asking for a second consecutive season where he breaks 2,000 total yards might be a bridge too far.

For one, the running back's health should be a consideration. For a few years McCaffrey had the reputation of being "injury prone". He only played 10 games in the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to shoulder, thigh, hamstring and ankle injuries.

It's worth noting that those two injury-riddled seasons came after he hit 2,000 total yards for the first time in his career. In 2019 he had 403 touches for 2,392 yards and 19 touchdowns. Last year, he saw 339 touches for 2,023 yards and 21 touchdowns.

The 49ers have to be aware of this trend and should be looking to reduce his workload. That might have been the impetus for drafting rookie running back Isaac Guerendo in the fourth round.

It wouldn't be surprising to see McCaffrey pick up an injury along the way that costs him a few games. It also wouldn't be surprising to see his volume dip to a point that 2,000 yards is out of reach.

George Kittle Will Lead the Team in Receiving

Brandon Aiyuk has been the 49ers leading receiver in three out of the last four years. His ability to consistently beat man coverage and make plays downfield has made him the team's top receiving option.

But it's looking less and less likely that he'll be in a position to lead the team this season. He still has not ended his holdout over contract concerns and CeeDee Lamb's shiny new contract isn't likely to help in that regard.

If Aiyuk's holdout lasts into the regular season or gets to the point where he has to be traded then the Niners hierarchy will be affected.

Deebo Samuel is the next receiver in line to become the de facto No. 1. But George Kittle was slightly more involved in the offense last season with one more target, five more catches and 128 more yards.

Kittle was the more efficient option with 11.3 yards per target to Samuel's 10.0.

Of course, Samuel's role as a rusher means he will still be a focal point. He had more total yards than Kittle because of his 225 rushing yards with five more scores on the ground.

Still, it's worth considering that Kittle will absorb more targets than Samuel with Aiyuk potentially out of the lineup.

Nick Bosa Gets Back to the Top of the Leaderboard in Sacks

Nick Bosa led the NFL in sacks by 2.5 with 18.5 in 2022. He didn't come anywhere close to that numbers in 2023, though. His 10.5 sacks were good for 17th on the leaderboard.

In other words, he posted good numbers for the average top pass-rusher on an NFL team.

That's not the kind of production the 49ers have come to expect from the 26-year-old, though.

It's fair to wonder if some of his lack of overall production came from the holdout that lasted up until the season started. Bosa didn't sign his new extension until a few days before Week 1 last season. Through the first seven weeks of the season he had just 2.5 sacks. From Week 8 on, he had eight sacks.

If we extrapolate that pace over the course of the season it puts him in the neighborhood of his 2022 totals.

The Niners defense needs Bosa to be as dominant as possible as the depth on the edge is one of the few concerns the unit has.

Expect him to return to dominant form after putting in a full camp.
