MLB Trade Deadline 2024: Twitter Reacts to Trades, Fails, Surprises and Non-Deals
The 2024 MLB trade deadline came and went on Tuesday, and there weren't as many fireworks as in years past.
Whereas big names like Justin Verlander and Juan Soto were dealt away at the last two deadlines, teams focused more on adding depth pieces this year.
Still, there were enough deals to keep fans on social media buzzing throughout the leadup to the deadline.

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a splash just a few minutes before the deadline by landing Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty. The right-hander was coveted by multiple teams leading up to the deadline, but in the end, Los Angeles solidified itself as the top contender in the National League by adding to an already strong pitching staff.
The Baltimore Orioles also positioned themselves to compete for a spot in the World Series by bolstering their lineup with the addition of outfielder Eloy Jiménez from the Chicago White Sox. While Jiménez is hitting .240 this season with five homers and 16 RBI in 65 games, the Orioles are among the favorites to win the American League.
Another deal on Tuesday that drew praise was the San Diego Padres' acquisition of All-Star closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins. The Padres beat out several contenders that were interested in Scott, including the Dodgers, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.
Scott brings a 1.18 ERA to San Diego, so he should help the team improve its chances of earning a playoff spot in the National League. Fans were excited by the move:
The Pittsburgh Pirates had a busy day with the acquisitions of reliever Josh Walker, utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa and outfielder Bryan De La Cruz. At 54-52, the Pirates sit two games out of the final wild-card spot in the National League, so it appears that the team is motivated to end an eight-year playoff drought.
Still, fans online were surprised by how active Pittsburgh was on the trade market leading up to the deadline:
Of course, fans weren't completely happy, as some teams failed to make any major moves before the deadline passed. The Yankees, in particular, drew the ire of their fanbase for their lack of activity on Tuesday.
It was also surprising that a pair of struggling teams held on to their most coveted players, as the White Sox didn't move starting pitcher Garrett Crochet and the Tigers retained starting pitcher Tarik Skubal. Both players were All-Star selections this year and would've commanded massive returns, but their respective franchises decided not to deal them.
Now that the dust has settled, it's time to buckle up for what should be an exciting playoff race during the final two months of the regular season. Teams are certainly hoping that their decisions at the trade deadline will pay off as they chase a spot in the postseason.
