Adam WellsJul 30, 2024

The San Diego Padres' bullpen overhaul continued on Tuesday with the acquisition of All-Star closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins.

Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Padres and Marlins are finalizing a deal for Scott.

Christina De Nicola of MLB.com added the Padres will also receive Bryan Hoeing for a package that consists of prospects Robby Snelling, Adam Mazur, Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears.

Scott was drawing interest from several playoff contenders, including the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies.

The addition of Scott comes two days after the Padres acquired Jason Adam from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for three prospects.

San Diego general manager A.J. Preller has never been afraid to make an aggressive move. His deals for Scott and Adam only emphasize how bold he is willing to be if he believes there is an opportunity to make the playoffs.

Per B/R's Joel Reuter, three of the Padres' top seven prospects—Snelling, Mazur and Dylan Lesko—have been used in these two trades. Snelling and Mazur were ranked No. 3 and 4 in the system, respectively.

The Padres have overcome a slow start to find themselves right in the thick of the NL playoff race. They enter Tuesday with a 57-51 record and are tied with the New York Mets for the No. 2 wild card spot. They are also within 6.5 games of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Even though rotation depth seemed like a bigger priority for San Diego. Dylan Cease, Michael King and Matt Waldron are the only starters on the team that have thrown more than 71 innings.

There is something to be said for building a potentially dominant bullpen that can eat up a lot of innings in a postseason series. Scott, Adam, Robert Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon is as deep as any group of relievers in MLB.

Scott's 1.18 ERA is the fourth-lowest among all relievers this season. The left-hander has 53 strikeouts and has allowed 19 hits across 45.2 innings in 44 appearances. Left-handed hitters have a .077/.234/.128 slash line in 47 plate appearances against him.
