NFL Rumors: Steelers' Roman Wilson Considered 'Week-to-Week' with Ankle Injury

Timothy RappJul 30, 2024

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver is reportedly being considered week-to-week and is "OK," according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, after suffering an ankle injury on Tuesday.

It would appear that Wilson escaped a more serious injury than it initially appeared, a relief for the Steelers.

The rookie wideout suffered the injury after getting tackled on a jet sweep. He left the field on his own before getting carted back to the team's facilities.

"It was unfortunate we had an injury today, man," head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters. "Roman hurt his ankle on the tackle, and so we'll have more information regarding the length of his status in terms of how long he might be out."

Wilson, 23, was expected to battle for a major role in Pittsburgh's passing game after being a third-round pick out of Michigan. George Pickens will be the team's WR1 after Dionte Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers this offseason, but players like Wilson, Van Jefferson, Scotty Miller and Calvin Austin III are expected to fight for targets behind him.

Thus far, Wilson has made a strong impression:

He did so at Michigan as well, registering 48 catches for 789 yards and 12 touchdowns during his final season with the Wolverines, helping lead the school to a national championship.

Wilson brings a lot of speed and big-play potential to the Steelers, but he knows he has plenty of work ahead of him.

"There's a lot of things (to work on)," he told The Athletic's Mike DeFabo in June. "But step one for me is just playing lower. Getting in and out of my breaks a little better. Using my arms and just turning up (field) after the catch. Keep doing the things I did at Michigan and just keep playing. That's all I got to do is just focus on those step one, step two, step three each day and I'll be better."
