U.S. Men's Gymnastics Team Takes Bronze
2 of 3
As previously noted, the U.S. men's gymnastics team hadn't won a team medal since the 2008 Olympics—and hasn't won a gold medal since the 1984 games. In each of the past three Summer Olympics, the Americans have finished fifth.
While women's gymnastics remains a marquee sport in the U.S., things have waned on the men's side of things. That's why taking home any medal in Paris was big for the men's team.
Led by national champion Brody Malone, Stephen Nedoroscik, Frederick Richard, Paul Juda and Asher Hong, the Americans had a terrific group performance, ultimately edging out Great Britain for third place.
Malone competed in five of six events, while Nedoroscik delivered a clutch performance on pommel horse to secure a trip to the podium.
The bronze win was largely the result of a change in approach by USA Gymnastics coaches. In previous years, Team USA's routines simply weren't difficult enough, and coaches looked to change that.
"In an effort to boost the team's difficulty score, USA Gymnastics used a complicated bonus system that encouraged athletes to demonstrate upgraded skills," Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the Los Angeles Times wrote.
By offering a bonus system that rewarded more difficult skills and helped offset falls during the team-selection process, they found a squad that could truly compete on the biggest stage. Fortunately, it executed.
And while winning a bronze during an Olympics that features 329 medal events might not seem like a big deal, it's huge for the American men's gymnastics landscape.
Japan took gold in the event, while China won silver. If Team USA uses its third-place performance as a springboard to the 2028 Olympics, perhaps it will have a shot at its first gold in more than four decades.
France Keeping Pace, U.S. Women Share Podium, Djokovic Beats Nadal
3 of 3
Heading into this year's Olympics, Nielsen's Gracenote Virtual Medal Table projected the United States to lead all countries in total medals and for the host nation to finish fourth. While the U.S. did lead the medal count by Sunday afternoon, France was second.
France managed to keep pace on Monday and also picked up its fourth gold medal when Nicolas Gestin won the men's canoe slalom single.
"it's better than my dreams, it's my best race of my life," Gestin said, per Phillip O'connor of Reuters.
It was far from a bad day for the United States, though. In addition to taking bronze in the men's team gymnastics competition, they added medals in swimming competition. Americans Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant even shared to podium after taking second and third, respectively, in the women's 400-meter individual medley.
Canadian Summer McIntosh took gold.
While many of the lengthier events are still in the early stages, fans have seen some thrilling action, even without medals on the line. On Monday, legendary tennis stars Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Rafael Nadal of Spain faced off in the second round of men's tennis singles.
Djokovic, who has never won Olympic gold, beat the 14-time French Open champion 6-1 and 6-4 to advance to the third round.
While it wasn't a particularly lengthy match, it was an electric one that did carry some drama coming in. While Djokovic was the top seed coming into the tournament, Nadal has quite the record at Roland-Garros
According to BBC Sport, Nadal has lost just five of 117 matches at the venue. Three of those losses have come against Djokovic.
