Medal Count 2024 Olympics: Updated Standings, Highlights After Day 2

Kristopher KnoxJul 28, 2024

Sunday brought the second day of Olympic competition following Friday's opening ceremony. It also provided a thrilling slate of events that featured more medal rounds and the first appearance by the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team.

Team USA had close calls against South Sudan and Germany during exhibition play and opened its official Olympic schedule against Nikola Jokić and Serbia on Sunday morning. It was another tough test for the Americans, as Jokić remains arguably the best player in the world.

Sunday also saw the Olympic return of legendary gymnast Simone Biles, though she suffered a calf injury just before taking the floor qualifying competition.

Did Biles manage to pull through and recapture her previous Olympic form? Did Team USA ease concerns about its uninspired play to this point? Let's take a look at the current medal standings and a few highlights from Sunday's action.

Injury Proves to Be a Non-Issue for Biles

The calf injury Biles experienced on Sunday reportedly wasn't a new one. According to coach Cecile Landi, Biles had experienced calf soreness a couple of weeks before the Olympics and had a flare-up before the qualifying round.

"She felt a little something in her calf. But yeah, that's all," Landi said, per CNN's Kyle Feldscher and Issy Ronald.

However, Biles battled through any pain she might have experienced to deliver a nearly flawless routine.

Biles finished with an all-around score of 59.566, the second-best mark of her Olympic career and the leading score of the qualifying round.

However, Biles wasn't the only American to impress on Sunday. Sunisa Lee, who won the women's all-around gold in Toyko following Biles' withdrawal, posted a second-best score of 56.132.

Fellow American Jordan Chiles finished just behind Lee with a score of 56.065, though only two gymnasts from each country can advance to the finals. This means that Biles and Lee will go head-to-head for the first time in Olympic competition during Thursday's all-around finals.

As a team, the Americans posted an impressive score of 172.296, which will earn them a spot in Tuesday's team finals. The U.S. Women's team is seeking its third gold in the past four Olympics after finishing second to the Russian Olympic Committee in 2021.

Team USA Finds Form in Big Win over Serbia

Headlined by stars like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Devin Booker and Jayson Tatum, the U.S. men's basketball team arrived in Paris as heavy favorites to win gold. However, close wins during the exhibition round made it clear that Team USA couldn't coast to a fifth straight gold medal.

The Americans kicked off group play on Sunday against Jokić, Bogdan Bogdanović and a very skilled Serbian squad.

If Team USA took the competition lightly during exhibition play, that certainly wasn't the case against Serbia. Led by Durant (23 points) and James (21 points), the Americans proved to be far too much for the opposition to handle.

The U.S. team rolled to a 110-84 victory that puts it atop the standings for Group C—a group that includes Serbia, South Sudan and Puerto Rico. Perhaps more importantly, the victory showed that this talented group of individual stars has found its form, focus and willingness to accept roles.

"It's going to be somebody different every day. And we have that type of firepower," James said, per Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.

Serbia likely represented Team USA's toughest test in group play, but teams like Germany, France, Canada and Australia could create pressure in the elimination rounds. All four picked up wins on Saturday.

South Sudan, which only lost by a point to the Americans in exhibition, beat Puerto Rico 90-79 on Sunday and will face Team USA in a rematch on Wednesday.
