Packers' Jordan Love: 'There's No Hiding' From Pressure After Record NFL Contract

Timothy RappJul 27, 2024

Jordan Love signed a massive contract extension with the Green Bay Packers on Friday, agreeing to a four-year, $220 million deal.

That—temporarily, at least—tied him for the highest average annual salary ($55 million) in the NFL, a contract that brings with it plenty of pressure. As Love told reporters on Saturday, he isn't going to shy away from those expectations:

"Being a first-round pick, there's pressure. Becoming the starter, there's pressure, but there's always pressure. I think that's, you know, part of the job that we sign up for. You've got to find ways to deal with that pressure and handle it as best you can to be the best player you can be every day."

"But there's always pressure. There's no hiding that. ... I've been in some great pressure situations, so I think there's always going to be that. But just finding a way to navigate through this and handle it best I can."

Love only has one season of starting experience but he made the most of it, throwing 18 touchdowns and just one interception in the final eight games of the regular season before leading the Packers to a playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys.

That meant that locking him up wasn't going to come cheap, especially with the quarterback market ballooning to borderline obscene levels. But the Packers have a lot of confidence in Love.

"Seeing how he handled that this past year becoming the guy, handling that pressure, coming out the other side of it, just gave us a lot of confidence that this is the guy that's going to lead us into the future," Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters. "I'm really excited about that."
