Olympic Swimming 2024: Women's 4x100M Freestyle Relay Medal Winners and Times
For the fourth consecutive time and the fifth time in the past six Olympics, Australia won the gold medal in the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris on Saturday.
The Aussies were heavy favorites and delivered with an Olympic-record time of 3:28.92, but they were pushed by the United States and China, who won silver and bronze, respectively.
Here is a look at how each of the eight finalists finished in Saturday's relay:
- Australia: 3:28.92
- United States: 3:30.20
- China: 3:30.30
- Canada: 3:32.99
- Sweden: 3:33.79
- France: 3:34.99
- Great Britain: 3:35.25
- Italy: 3:36.51
While the Americans still have the most all-time gold medals in the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay with 14, Australia is now second on that list with six.
The Australian team was made up of Emma McKeon, Mollie O'Callaghan, Meg Harris and Shayna Jack. While Jack made her Olympic debut, McKeon, O'Callaghan and Harris all repeated as 4x100 free relay champions from the 2020 Summer Olympics.
It was an especially big win for the 30-year-old McKeon, as it gave her a sixth career Olympic gold medal and a 12th Olympic medal overall.
That ties McKeon with Americans Jenny Thompson, Natalie Coughlin and Dara Torres for the most career Olympic medals by a women's swimmer.
Earlier Saturday, Team USA's Katie Ledecky won her 11th career Olympic medal by taking bronze in the 400-meter freestyle event.
For the United States, it has now medaled in the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay at 11 consecutive Olympics, but it has not won gold since the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney.
Simone Manuel was the only member of this year's American relay team who also competed on the team in the 2020 Olympics.
She now has six career Olympic medals, including gold in the 100-meter freestyle and the 4x100-meter medley relay in 2016.
Team USA's other members—Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske and Kate Douglass—all medaled for the first time in the 4x100-meter free relay, although Huske and Douglass previously each won an Olympic medal in other events.
The United States edged out China at the wall for silver despite the fact that the Chinese were in second for most of the race.
Even so, it was a huge performance for China since the country had not medaled in the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay since winning silver in 1996.
