Bill O'Brien Penn State: Why Patriots Coach Won't Last with Nittany Lions
The Penn State Nittany Lions finally landed their man.
However, Bill O'Brien will find leaving the New England Patriots for a hurting college football program will not end well.
The clock was running out and the Nittany Lions settled, which will doom them.
It needed to be a big name coach heading to Happy Valley. Someone who could quickly make people forget the horrid events that were revealed in 2011, as well as get top-notch recruits to keep the program going strong.
Instead, Penn State picked a guy with no head coaching experience at the college or NFL level.
Sure, coming from the line of Bill Belichick and the Patriots will entice some recruits to come play for O'Brien, but rarely do those who leave Belichick's staff for head coaching gigs ever pan out.
As reported by ESPN NFL insider Chris Mortensen, the Nittany Lions plan to officially make O'Brien their head coach this Saturday.
The only problem is that O'Brien will still be with the Patriots in the coming weeks. They're resting for the playoffs right now, and next weekend O'Brien will be calling plays for them. He'll remain with the Patriots for as long as they keep playing, which is not a good thing for the Nittany Lions.
If he were serious about his new job, and if Penn State were serious about having him, he'd no longer be with New England.
Unfortunately, things are already off to a bad start, and it's not going to get better.
Ben Jones covers the Nittany Lions for StateCollege.com, and he tweeted some disheartening news if you're a Penn State fan.
A poor recruiting class for 2012 is not what this program needs. However, that's were Penn State is headed towards with O'Brien as head coach.
This past season is the only year O'Brien was offensive coordinator with the Patriots, but he does have some college experience.
O'Brien held positions with Brown, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Duke, never reaching anything higher than offensive coordinator.
Another poor start for O'Brien is that his future Nittany Lion players are finding out through the media and not by school administrators. Penn State's top running back Silas Redd tweeted this gem.
There isn't much O'Brien could do about that, but joining a place where players are thought of last doesn't bode well for his future. He can certainly change that, but then you have to add in the fact that the Nittany Lions are on a downward trend, and it's not going to be easy digging them out of the hole they're in.
I certainly wish O'Brien the best luck, as it is a tough job for him, but it's just not going to work out. He isn't the guy the Nittany Lions truly needed, and that will be their downfall.
