In the ultimate David vs. Goliath matchup, Zayn beat Gunther for the IC title at WrestleMania 40, ending his historic 666-day reign, but it wasn't long before he would be faced with another massive challenge in the form of Breakker.

Zayn won a Triple Threat match against Chad Gable and Bronson Reed at King and Queen of the Ring and then beat the Olympian in a singles match Clash at the Castle.

That essentially spelled the end of his rivalry with Gable and allowed Breakker to step up.

In the weeks following WrestleMania, Breakker became a focal point on Raw, and he left a path of destruction in his wake, seemingly ending Ricochet's tenure with WWE via a brutal backstage attack.

He then shifted his focus toward Zayn and the Intercontinental Championship, and given that he considered himself a fighting champion, he agreed to put the title on the line at Money in the Bank in his home country of Canada.

Breakker took the fight to Zayn for much of the match, but as he has done so often over the course of his career, The Underdog from the Underground overcame the odds and managed to pull out the victory.

An undeterred Breakker continued to pursue Zayn and the IC title coming out of Money in the Bank, as he launched multiple attacks against the beloved Superstar in order to goad him into another championship match.

Ilja Dragunov got involved in the storyline as well, attempting to lend a helping hand to Zayn, and Sami rewarded him with a title match on a recent episode of Raw.

Breakker interfered by spearing Dragunov, causing a disqualification and leading to a No. 1 contender's match between the two on the July 22 edition of Raw.

During the latter stages, Breakker hit Dragunov with a vicious Spear outside the ring, and the referee determined that The Mad Dragon could not continue, giving his rival the victory.

Breakker sent another warning shot in Zayn's direction to close that episode of Raw, as he speared Sami following a tag team match that saw Zayn and Jey Uso beat Finn Bálor and JD McDonagh.

At SummerSlam, Breakker made the most of his second opportunity, as the two-time NXT champion beat Zayn to get his first taste of championship gold on the main roster.
