Brandon Aiyuk Trade Would Be Beneficial for 49ers, Commanders Amid NFL Rumors
Brandon Aiyuk caught 75 balls for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023 as the leading receiver for the 49ers, a team that won the NFC Championship before losing in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
Despite what was a banner year for the fourth-year wide receiver, it is not all sunny in San Francisco, where a contract dispute looms large over the team and its budding star.
Aiyuk told Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor on The Pivot podcast that he "for sure" wants to remain in a 49ers uniform but is "taking it personal" when it comes to contract negotiations.

If not the Niners, though, Aiyuk admitted he could see himself in a Commanders or Steelers uniform in 2024.
While ESPN's Adam Schefter told the Rothman & Ice podcast that he expects Aiyuk to wear the crimson and gold of San Francisco, Aiyuk posted a picture to his TikTok account of what appeared to be a Commanders practice.
The Commanders are in the middle of a rebuild, with a new head coach in Dan Quinn and a rookie quarterback in 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, Jayden Daniels. They have young studs at wideout in Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, but adding Aiyuk would given them the consistent threat at the position the team has missed in recent years.
Whereas McLaurin is a game-breaking speedster, Aiyuk can thrive in the short-to-intermediate game, taking a six-yard out for a big gain. In 2023, he averaged over 17 yards per reception, had 28 receptions over 20 yards, and amassed 382 YAC.
For all of the attention paid to all-world tight end George Kittle and fellow wideout Deebo Samuel, Aiyuk was equally as important to that team's offense a season ago.
With that said, the last thing the defending NFC champs should want right now is even a respectfully disgruntled wide out in the locker room. If the team knows it is not going to sign him to an deserved extension, rather than letting hard feelings fester, trade him and get something in return rather than letting Aiyuk walk next offseason for nothing.
The Commanders are a team that could use an upgrade at the position and making matters more intriguing for the organization is Aiyuk's history with Daniels. They were teammates in 2019 at Arizona State, where they hooked up for eight of the quarterback's 17 passing touchdowns.
There is proven chemistry, Aiyuk clearly sees something promising about the squad to have both mentioned them by name in his interview with Clark and Co. and posted a picture of their practice film on his social media.
While the 49ers front office, led by general manager John Lynch, has made several excellent decisions while building an almost-dynasty, this one has the potential to be clear mistake. Trade Aiyuk, reap the rewards, and both teams can move on.
Or, sign him to an extension and get a jump on things before feelings are hurt beyond repair.
If they are not already.
