LeBron James Rumors: Lakers Star Open to Contract That Would Help LA Improve Roster

Mike ChiariJun 29, 2024

Following his reported decision to opt out of the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is reportedly considering a move that would help L.A. become bigger players in free agency.

According to Chris Haynes of TNT Sports and Bleacher Report, James is looking into "opening up a pathway" for the Lakers to receive the full mid-level exception "for the right targets."

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported earlier Saturday that James had decided to decline his $51.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season. Although that makes him a free agent, the expectation is that he will re-sign with the Lakers on a new deal.

The full mid-level exception this offseason is worth $12.9 million, meaning the Lakers could sign a player of significance if they are able to secure it.

Of course, James would have to take a pay cut to make it happen, but given that he will turn 40 during the 2024-25 season and may not have many years left in the NBA, he may be willing to do so if it increases his chances of vying for a fifth career championship.

Just two seasons ago, James helped lead the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals where they were swept by the eventual NBA champion Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets took them down again this past season, although it occurred in the first round, which led to the decision to fire head coach Darvin Ham and replace him with JJ Redick.

As of now, the Lakers are trending toward having largely the same roster as they did in 2023-24 with James, Anthony Davis, D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves as the key players.

A significant trade is possible, but since their available trade assets are middling at best, signing a player with the exception may be the most realistic way for L.A. to improve.

As the NBA's all-time leading scorer, a 20-time All-Star, a four-time NBA Finals MVP and a four-time NBA MVP, James has undoubtedly earned as big of a contract as he desires.

That is even truer when considering that LeBron is still playing at an elite level, as he averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, 7.3 rebounds, 2.1 three-pointers made and 1.3 steals per game last season.

James is a billionaire, though, and it is entirely possible he values another title more than money at this point in his career.

Also, when considering that the Lakers selected his son, Bronny James, in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft, LeBron may be even more motivated to win a championship with Bronny by his side.
