Bronny James Rumors: NBA Scouts 'Applauded' Combine Performance amid Lakers Buzz
Bronny James reportedly impressed some NBA talent evaluators with his performance at the NBA Draft Combine this week.
According to ESPN's Jamal Collier, some scouts "applauded" James for the manner in which he "filled a role to help his team win, hit open shots and played defense with enthusiasm" during scrimmages.
Bronny, who is the son of NBA legend and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, said this week that he still hasn't decided if he intends to remain in the 2024 NBA draft pool or withdraw and return for a second season of college basketball.
There was a great deal of hype surrounding Bronny's arrival at USC prior to the 2023-24 season due both to his relation to LeBron and his status as one of the top recruits in the nation.
However, Bronny went into cardiac arrest while working out last summer, and subsequently had to undergo a procedure on his heart. He would miss the first eight games of the season, and never quite established himself as a key contributor during his freshman season.
All told, Bronny appeared in 25 games and averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 19.4 minutes per contest, and he shot just 36.6 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from beyond the arc.
An anonymous NBA executive suggested that Bronny ran into some tough luck at USC and has the potential to be an NBA player in the future:
"He was in a tough situation in college. He had the health issue, and their backcourt was already set. [Isaiah] Collier is a legit lottery pick, and Boogie Ellis as a senior ahead of him. So I can see where [James] needs more time, but in a few years he's got a shot to be an NBA rotation player."
In addition to entering the draft, Bronny entered the transfer portal, so he could still return to college and play elsewhere. He has until June 16 to make that decision.
Bronny's production from last season suggests it may behoove him to return to school, but he may have boosted his stock significantly at the combine.
In addition to his strong showing in the scrimmage, Collier noted that James had a 40.5-inch vertical leap, which ranked fourth among participants, plus he made 19 of his 25 shots in the three-point shooting drill, which ranked second.
Also, the fact that Bronny is LeBron's son is undoubtedly a factor that could aid him in getting drafted.
The Lakers own the Nos. 17 and 55 overall picks in the 2024 NBA draft, and Shams Charania, Jovan Buha and Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that the organization is open to the idea of taking Bronny with one of those picks to help LeBron "fulfill his dream" of teaming with his son.
It was later reported by ESPN's Stephen A. Smith on the Stephen A. Smith Show that the Dallas Mavericks may have an interest in taking Bronny in an attempt to lure LeBron away from the Lakers in free agency.
Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman did not project Bronny to be selected in his latest 2024 NBA mock draft, but given that this year's draft is seemingly one of the weaker ones in recent memory, perhaps a team will be more willing to take a chance on James.
