Bronny James Rumors: NBA Insider Says LeBron's Son 'Needed to Do More' at Combine
Bronny James was impressive in individual drills at the NBA scouting combine, but his performance in a scrimmage left something to be desired.
James finished with four points on 2-of-8 shooting and added four rebounds during 19 minutes of playing time in Tuesday's scrimmage, which led to a tepid review from at least one scout.
"He made that nice move for a floater," the scout told ESPN's Jamal Collier. "But he needed to do something more to stand out."
Before struggling in game action, James had seemingly improved his stock with his performance in drills. He put up an impressive 40.5-inch vertical leap, tied for sixth among all participants, and was among the best shooters in most drills.
The USC guard also tried to separate himself from his father, LeBron James, saying his focus is on making his own name in the NBA.
"Bronny was just a nickname that I was just given when I was younger," James said. "But everything that follows my dad, people just try to link me with that and all the greatness that he's achieved. I haven't done anything yet, so I feel like there needs to be that divide between Bronny and LeBron.
"Everyone's heard this before. I just want to have people know my name is Bronny James and not being identified as just LeBron James' son. I feel like that would great."
James is coming off a rocky freshman season at USC and almost certainly would not be getting this type of draft attention without name association. He averaged just 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 36.6 percent from the floor. James also admitted he struggled making his return to the court after undergoing surgery to repair a congenital heart defect discovered after he went into cardiac arrest last July.
The NBA cleared James to play moving forward, but it's clear he's still playing catch up to improve his value among scouts.
B/R's Jonathan Wasserman does not have James being drafted in his latest mock draft nd has him outside his top 50 players overall.
