76ers' Joel Embiid: 'I Can't Feel Sorry for Myself' After Playing Injured vs. Knicks
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid isn't making any excuses after the team's 118-115 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference playoffs ended their season on Thursday night.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Embiid said "I can't feel sorry for myself" as he attempted to play through a surgically repaired knee injury.
Embiid had surgery on the meniscus in his left knee on Feb. 6. He played five of the final seven games in the regular season after returning to the lineup on April 2.
There were several times throughout the series against the Knicks that Embiid appeared to be favoring the injury. He converted a self-alley-oop in Game 1 before collapsing to the ground in pain.
Embiid was able to return for the second half of Game 1 and averaged 41.4 minutes per game in the series. He dropped 50 points in the Sixers' victory in Game 3.
The reigning NBA MVP led the 76ers with 39 points and 13 rebounds in the decisive Game 6. He averaged 33.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game in the first round.
This was the seventh postseason appearance of Embiid's career. He has yet to lead the Sixers past the second round in any of them. This was their first time losing in the opening round since the 2019-20 season.
