Anthony Davis: Lakers in 'Great Place' Ahead of NBA Playoffs, Not Focused on Seeding
Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis isn't overly concerned with the team's place in the Western Conference standings ahead of the postseason.
"I think we're in a great place," Davis said on Friday, per ESPN's Dave McMenamin.
The 31-year-old added that Los Angeles' job is to focus on the final two games of the regular season and "just kind of see what happens, where we stand after that."
The Lakers currently own the No. 10 seed in the West, although they have an identical record as the Golden State Warriors at No. 9 as well as the Sacramento Kings at No. 8.
While Los Angeles is guaranteed to stay in the play-in tournament, there's still a lot at stake. If the Lakers move up to No. 8, they'll have two chances to earn a playoff spot. On the other hand, the team would need to win two consecutive play-in games in order to make the playoffs if they end up at No. 9 or No. 10.
The Lakers are also required to finish with a better record than the Warriors and Kings in order to move above them in the standings, as they don't own a tiebreaker over either team.
Davis revealed that Los Angeles is focused on staying in the present despite the uncertainty regarding their seeding in the West.
"At the end of the day, no matter where you are in the standings, you still have to win," he said, per McMenamin. "For us, it's about taking it one game at a time. Whether that's 10th place, ninth place, eighth, no matter where you are. You can be the first seed, you still have to win basketball games. So that's our mindset. No matter where we are, we just got to win."
Although he's missed two of the Lakers' past eight games, Davis has remained relatively healthy throughout the 2023-24 season and helped the team earn a 45-35 record. He's suited up in 74 contests, averaging 24.5 points and 12.6 rebounds to go along with 2.4 blocks per game.
Los Angeles is very familiar with advancing beyond the play-in competition, making the Western Conference Finals in 2023 after participating in the tournament as a No. 7 seed.
The Lakers will look to snap a brief two-game losing streak and improve their postseason positioning during a clash with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. ET.
