Masters Cut Line 2024: Full List of Players Removed from 1st Major

Paul KasabianApr 12, 2024

A legion of notable names will not be playing the weekend at Augusta National Golf Club, where strong wind gusts took their toll on the Masters Tournament field en route to an ugly second round for many.

Only eight players finished under par on Friday, and just four players finished at two under or better. Ludvig Åberg cared the best round at three under.

The conditions were so tough that eight golfers finished eight over or worse on Friday, or the same amount that finished under par.

The list of players who missed the cut resembles a group that could be competing for a major championship. Instead, they'll all be going home early.

Past champions notably had a brutal day. Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Adam Scott and Charl Schwartzel have all won Masters tournaments since 2011. None of them will be playing this weekend. Recent major winners, such as Wyndham Clark and Justin Thomas, are also headed home.

Here's a look at the entire list of players who finished below the six-over cut line, alongside some notes on a few of their outings.

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas was shooting even par going into his final four holes on Friday, but he finished seven over after double bogeys on Nos. 15, 16 and 18 and a bogey on the 17th.

The 2022 PGA Championship victor, who just parted ways with caddy Jim "Bones" Mackay, has endured an unusual share of struggles for a player of his excellent caliber. He was looking pretty good until the end of his round, but he'll be heading home early after a nightmare finish.

His second shot on the par-five 15th found the water, leading to the double bogey. The 16th green may as well have been made of ice, as his second shot out of the bunker skated far away from the hole. A three-putt from there led to the 5.

A short par putt miss resulted in a bogey on the 17th, and then a drive that went way left set off a series of events ending in a double bogey and a missed cut.

Dustin Johnson

It's been a good LIV Golf season for Johnson, who sits sixth out of 55 golfers on the latest standings.

But the 2020 Masters champion, who holds the tournament's 72-hole record at 20-under, struggled mightily on Thursday and Friday.

Through 13 holes, Johnson was one over and looked more likely than not to make the cut. However, a pair of back-to-back double bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes knocked DJ completely off-track. A bogey on the last placed Johnson at six over going into Friday.

It only got worse in the second round. Johnson carded six bogeys on a nine-hole stretch from No. 3 to No. 11. His one-and-only birdie for the tournament occurred on the par-five 13th before he finished with consecutive bogeys on the 17th and 18th to end his weekend early.

Jordan Spieth

Like Johnson, Spieth found himself one over through 13 holes, with great hope to make the cut.

Unfortunately, also like Johnson, Spieth's closing holes were absolute nightmares. The biggest one occurred on the par-five 15th, which ended with Spieth carding a nine for a quadruple bogey.

On Spieth's fourth shot, a seemingly harmless chip off the green rolled of the surface and into the water. His sixth shot was well off the green, too, and then he needed three shots from there to move on.

Another bogey on the 17th left Spieth with a seven-over 79 heading into Friday. Spieth fared far better in the second round and even birdied that dreaded 15th hole, but a two-over 74 left him at nine over and well outside the cut.

Bubba Watson

Through 27 holes, Watson sat comfortably above the cut at two over. The two-time Masters champion looked prime to play the weekend, but then disaster struck over the next three holes in the form of a double bogey on No. 10, a quadruple bogey on No. 11 and a double bogey on No. 12.

Watson has had better days on the golf course. He's just 40th in the LIV Golf standings, failing to finish better than a tie of 15th in any of the league's five competitions this season.

But things were looking pretty good for Watson through a round-and-a-half. Unfortunately, the wind affected him just like everyone else. His tee shot went way left on No. 10 and set him up for the double bogey.

On No. 11, his second shot found the water, and his fourth went over the green. It was a battle from there en route to a snowman. Then Watson took another penalty on the par-three 12th, finishing the disastrous trio of holes.

Watson actually finished a respectable two-over outside that stretch, but unfortunately, he'll be heading home early after a run of tough luck.
