NFL Coach: J.J. McCarthy's 'Technique Is Jacked Up' amid NFL Draft, Giants Rumors

Andrew PetersApr 11, 2024

Amid buzz that Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy could be one of the first quarterbacks selected in this year's draft, one NFL assistant coach said McCarthy's throwing technique could use some work, per The Athletic's Ben Standig.

"(McCarthy's) technique is jacked up, but when we met him (this draft cycle), he knew he had to work on layering the ball," the assistant coach said. "(Drake) Maye is more of a sandlot passer. J.J. is probably better at working from the pocket in the long term. I'd probably take him (third)."

Last year at Michigan, McCarthy had 2,991 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and just four interceptions while leading the Wolverines to a national title. While his numbers aren't as impressive as quarterbacks like USC's Caleb Williams, LSU's Jayden Daniels or North Carolina's Drake Maye, McCarthy has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the draft class over the past few months.

He further established himself through an impressive pro-day performance earlier this week. Per Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, one AFC scout called him a "super athlete" and praised his skill set.

But as one assistant coach said, his technique needs to be fixed, though it seems like he is aware of that and is striving to improve.

Bleacher Report's Scouting Department considers McCarthy to be the No. 33 overall prospect and the No. 4 quarterback in this year's draft class. In the latest mock draft, McCarthy is projected to land with the Minnesota Vikings with the No. 11 pick.

The Vikings need a quarterback after Kirk Cousins signed with the Atlanta Falcons this offseason, and they could find that player in the draft. Top quarterbacks Williams, Daniels and Maye will likely be off the board at No. 11, so McCarthy could be a solid option, especially after the praise he's received in recent weeks.

Another option could be the New York Giants, who have faced some uncertainty at quarterback over the past year. Earlier this week, it was reported the Giants are interested in a quarterback in the draft, and that could mean they are looking into drafting McCarthy.
