NFL Draft Rumors: Giants Showing 'Strong' Interest in QB Amid Maye, McCarthy Links
The New York Giants are "showing strong interest at the QB position" ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
"Either (1) They want to draft a quarterback, or (2) They want teams to think they need to trade with the Giants if they want one," Russini reported.
The report noted the Giants have met with Washington's Michael Penix Jr. and staged workouts with North Carolina's Drake Maye and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero in March he still views Daniel Jones as the starter once he fully recovers from his torn ACL.
"We're excited to have Drew [Lock], and he knows what his role is going to be," Daboll said. "He's going to get a lot of reps this spring, he needs to learn our system, but again excited to get Daniel back, when he gets back he'll be the guy."
But the draft will be a better barometer for how the franchise really views Jones long-term.
His four-year, $160 million contract already looks like a costly mistake after his performance regressed in a big way (909 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions in six starts) before his injury. Using a Top-10 pick on another quarterback would mean it's only a matter of time before Jones is out the door.
Some may argue the writing is on the wall regardless of what New York does with the No. 6 selection. The mere perception the team covets a QB to some extent sends an implicit message about the present setup.
