NBA L2M Report: Heat Hurt by 2 Incorrect Calls in Loss to Pacers amid Playoff Push
The NBA's Last Two Minute Report from Sunday's game between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers revealed some critical incorrect calls that hurt the Heat amid their playoff push.
The Pacers won Sunday's game 117-115, bumping Miami back to the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference.
According to the report, Pacers guard TJ McConnell should have been called for a foul on Tyler Herro's three-point attempt with 55.1 seconds to play. The report stated that McConnell made contact with Herro's hand during the release, impacting his attempt.
After that missed call, Bam Adebayo was incorrectly called for a foul after knocking the ball away from Miles Turner. Had there not been a foul, it would have been a Pacers turnover. Instead, they were awarded two free throws to give Indiana a 115-11 lead.
The two incorrect calls were costly to the Heat. Had Herro been awarded the free throws on the missed three, the strong free-throw shooter could have tied the game. If Adebayo hadn't been called for a foul, Miami could have tied the game or taken the lead off the turnover.
Instead, the Pacers walked away with a win that helped them hold their position as the No. 6 seed and the Heat are likely facing a play-in tournament appearance.
Miami can't dwell on the loss too much, as it will look to close out the season strong in the final four games and prepare for a tough play-in matchup.
The Heat are currently projected to be matched up with the Philadelphia 76ers in the play-in tournament. The 76ers plummeted to seventh place in the East with Joel Embiid off the court and now will likely have to earn their way into the postseason.
Miami is no stranger to the play-in tournament, though. Last year, the Heat handled business in the play-in tournament before upsetting the No. 1 seed Milwaukee Bucks on their way to an NBA Finals appearance.
It was an improbable performance, and one they're looking to replicate this year.
