Buy or Sell These WWE Legends at WrestleMania 40, Latest on Moné in AEW, More Rumors

Chris RolingMar 29, 2024

Even though many of the long-awaited debuts and free-agency signings have come to fruition, the pro wrestling rumor mill keeps ramping up the pace.

For one, the arrival of Mercedes Moné in AEW continues to send shockwaves of fallout, which includes rumblings about WWE's efforts and more.

And looming ever-larger into the spotlight is the upcoming WrestleMania 40, the two-night event with a stacked-looking card that, let the buzz tell it, will only continue to grow in size as the march toward the event continues.

With so much from the rumor mill on a daily basis right now, here's a quick look at the top buzz to know and some advice as to whether fans should buy or sell each item.

WWE Interest in Mercedes Moné?

1 of 4

Understandably, there has been some debate amongst pro wrestling fans on the subject of just how much WWE wanted Mercedes Moné back.

Emphasis on the how much part, though, as WWE would have obviously liked to have Sasha Banks back. But given the free agency of Kazuchika Okada and WWE's apparent stance of "if they sign, they sign," it was up for debate.

According to PW Insider (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), WWE also offered Moné a contract "worth $10 million or more" over a number of years, similar to what she got in AEW that makes her the top-paid female Superstar to date.

This one feels like a buy. Since the big merger and the Triple H-led creative era, it feels like WWE has been throwing out major cash, whether it's on returns like CM Punk or speculated extensions for the likes of Drew McIntyre.

Getting Sasha Banks back to headline against the likes of Becky Lynch again while keeping her away from the biggest competitor since WCW seems like something WWE would've been willing to do at a big price tag.

Explanation for Jon Moxley's Absence

2 of 4

The subject of Jon Moxley's absence from AEW programming has been a hot topic as of late.

After all, Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli picked up a notable tag team win over FTR, which seemed to set them up with some nice momentum.

Then, nothing, yet according to Fightful Select (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), the time off for Moxley was always planned in advance, citing bookings in Mexico and other locales.

And that's an easy buy. It's not unreasonable to think AEW wouldn't let Moxley go out on a high note, though it is a little strange not to hear an official explanation of why his team wasn't in the AEW Tag Team Title tournament.

But so it goes for a promotion that openly lets its Superstars compete overseas and elsewhere, which the fanbase surely understands.

More Matches Added to 'Mania Card?

3 of 4

The aptly-titled "WrestleMania XL" could be huge from a quantity of matches standpoint.

As of this writing, there are roughly 10 matches planned for the event over the course of the two-night affair, though the exact night for most of those, let alone the order, remains a mystery.

And according to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), that number could balloon by at least four more matches, with the end goal being roughly seven matches per night.

That might not sound like all that much, but keep in mind the event has been bumped up to a 7 p.m. ET start time and in addition to the matches themselves, one has to account for entrance times, intermissions, promos and non-match segments, too.

Yet, it's not all that hard to buy it. WWE has given itself some wiggle room with the new start time and has multiple top men and women's title matches, multiple tag titles, multiple mid-card titles, The Rock's in a tag match and other non-title-yet-personal feuds to settle and Superstars to spotlight.

So yes, it feels like we're just getting started on the 'Mania match card front.

WWE Planning Legendary Names for 'Mania

4 of 4

The rumor mill's hosting a fire sale this week—and fans should be buying it all up like a product that won't be produced again.

Case in point, the highlight of the week: According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), WWE has aspirations to carve out roles for John Cena, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and even Undertaker at WrestleMania 40.

As of now, there apparently aren't any in-ring plans for Austin (who last wrestled at WrestleMania 38 in his big return) or Cena (various lately), which isn't much of a surprise, given the lack of storylines or appearances recently. Undertaker has adamantly been retired.

But the wording of the report is particular that it doesn't specify actual in-ring action, so it's safe to presume WWE would love to have some of its biggest-ever legends involved, even if it's only with a mic in their hands.
