Russell Wilson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Odell Beckham Jr. and All NFL Post-June 1 Releases

A few notable names received the post-June 1 designation this offseason to help mitigate the cost of their departures from their respective teams.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero listed the group Thursday, which includes Russell Wilson, Odell Beckham Jr., Jameis Winston, Michael Thomas and Jimmy Garoppolo:

The June 1 designation allows a team to spread the cost of a player's release across two years.

For the Denver Broncos, that was the only way they could possibly absorb the record-setting $85 million in dead money triggered by releasing Wilson.

Then there are the more marginal savings that can go a long way for teams with championship aspirations.

The San Francisco 49ers are on the hook for $26.1 million by cutting defensive lineman Arik Armstead. That's a more manageable sum when it can be paid out over 2024 ($10.6 millIon) and 2025 ($15.5 million).

The margins were even smaller for the Buffalo Bills, who preferred to split the dead money for Tre'Davious White to $6.2 million this year and $4.1 million next.

Being a post-June 1 cut doesn't mean a player has to wait until the summer to sign, either.

Wilson wasted no time in announcing he had agreed to a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Winston is reportedly on his way to the Cleveland Browns to back up Deshaun Watson. Veteran edge-rusher Shaq Barrett agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins a day after the negotiating window opened.
