Cowboys, Seahawks, Bucs Are Only NFL Teams Yet to Agree to New Free Agent Contract

Erin WalshMar 12, 2024

NFL free agency doesn't officially begin until the start of the new league year on Wednesday, but pending free agents have been able to negotiate deals with teams since noon on Monday.

Nearly every team has agreed to terms on a contract with an external free agent—someone not on their roster in 2023—except for three teams, the Dallas Cowboys, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The biggest surprise on this list is the Cowboys, which have made just one signing in the form of retaining long snapper Trent Sieg.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters in January that the team would be taking an "all-in" approach this offseason, but considering his team has yet to make a move, it's worth wondering what the franchise's definition of "all-in" actually is.

That said, Dallas has just $8.8 million in cap space, according to Spotrac, which doesn't give the franchise much room to add a marquee free agent.

Still, the Cowboys are desperate, and they're running out of time to land a top free agent with players continuing to fly off the board.

The Buccaneers, at least, have been busy retaining their own players, reportedly agreeing to contracts with quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans, defensive lineman Greg Gaines, linebacker Lavonte David, safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and kicker Chase McLaughlin.

Retaining Mayfield and Evans was considered to be a priority for the Bucs, which are hoping the offense will reach new heights in 2024.

The Buccaneers still have $16.7 million in cap space entering the 2024 campaign, according to Spotrac.

The Seahawks, meanwhile, have made just two signings. The re-signed tight end Noah Fant and defensive end Leonard Williams.

According to Spotrac, the Seahawks still have $46.8 million in cap space this offseason.
