Packers' Updated Depth Chart After Reported Josh Jacobs Contract

The Green Bay Packers' backfield will look different in 2024 after Monday's splash move.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported the NFC North team is expected to sign running back Josh Jacobs to a new deal. While Aaron Jones is already on the roster, Jacobs has been one of the best running backs in the league of late and adds more firepower to an offense looking to take another step in 2024.

Here is the team's depth chart for offensive skill players following this move:

  • TE: Luke Musgrave, Tucker Kraft

AJ Dillon is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, so the Packers had a hole at running back even if Jones is back and leading the way.

And it seems as if Jones will be back, as Rapoport said the plan is to pair him with the newest addition.

Enter Jacobs, who is just one season removed from leading the league in rushing yards with 1,653 in 2022. He also had 12 rushing touchdowns and 53 catches for 400 yards during that 2022 campaign.

It was the third time the Alabama product ran for more than 1,000 yards since he entered the league in 2019, although he was less effective last season.

Jacobs ran for 805 yards and six touchdowns on 3.5 yards per carry in 2023. That was quite the fall from the previous campaign when he tallied a career-best 4.9 yards per carry while turning heads as a Pro Bowler and First-Team All-Pro selection.

Perhaps splitting carries with Jones will help him stay fresh in 2024, which could lead to an increase in yards per carry again. He has also proven himself as a pass-catcher in the past with two seasons of more than 50 receptions, which should help him serve as a safety valve for Jordan Love on important third downs.

Using resources on the running back position isn't always the best idea in today's NFL, but Jacobs has been one of the league's best at times and could return to form while playing alongside Jones.

If that is the case, this will be a critical addition for Green Bay.
