Steve Kerr, Warriors Agree to 2-Year, $35M Contract; Will Be Highest-Paid NBA HC Ever
The Golden State Warriors and head coach Steve Kerr have agreed on a two-year, $35 million contract extension, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski:
Per Wojnarowski, the deal runs through the 2025-26 season, and it makes Kerr the highest-paid head coach (by average annual value) in NBA history.
"San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich makes more annually, sources say, but he holds the dual title of president and coach," Wojnarowski wrote. "Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra signed an eight-year extension that pays him approximately $15 million a season, sources said."
Kerr has coached the Warriors since the 2014-15 season, leading the team to four NBA titles and six Western Conference crowns in his first nine campaigns.
The 58-year-old Kerr starred at the University of Arizona before playing in the NBA for six teams from 1988-2003. He's best known for his time on Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls, helping the team win three straight championships from 1996-1998. He also won championships with the Spurs in 1999 and 2003 for five total as a player.
Between his retirement in 2003 and the beginning of his coaching days in 2014, Kerr spent most of his time as an NBA analyst for TNT, save for a period from 2007-2010 when he worked as the Phoenix Suns' general manager.
Kerr has since become one of the most decorated coaches in NBA history, leading the Warriors to a .665 winning percentage over his first nine seasons. If he wins another title as a coach, it will be his 10th overall (five as a player, five as a coach).
He'd become just the fourth person in NBA history to win 10 or more titles as a player or coach, joining Phil Jackson (two as a player, nine as a coach), Bill Russell (nine as a player, two as a player-coach) and Sam Jones (10 as a player). Red Auerbach notably won 11 as well (nine as a coach, two more as an executive).
