Antonio Pierce: Raiders Plan to Use 'Jordan Rules' as Inspiration vs. Patrick Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes has been consistently compared to Michael Jordan, and at least one rival coach is treating the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback like His Airness.
During an appearance on Maxx Crosby's The Rush Podcast (11-minute mark), Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce explained that he took a physical approach with Mahomes during a Christmas Day win just like the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons did with Jordan (h/t Luke Straub of USA Today's Raiders Wire).
"We've got the Jordan Rules and we've got what I'm calling now as long as I'm here, the Patrick Mahomes Rules," Pierce said. "You remember when Jordan was going through it with the Pistons, all those guys in the '80s before he became Air Jordan, the Pistons used to whip his [behind]. Any time he came to the hole: elbows, feeling him, love taps. We're in his head, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually.
"So I showed my guys Jordan getting his [tail] whooped, consistently."
The Pistons defeated Jordan's Chicago Bulls in the playoffs in 1988, 1989 and 1990 using that approach, although the all-time great eventually prevailed in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals and went on to win six championships as arguably the greatest basketball player of all time.
Las Vegas found some success against Mahomes in the regular season, but he still led the Chiefs to their third Lombardi Trophy in five years and remains the gold standard in the NFL.
The Raiders know they will have to go through Mahomes if they hope to achieve their goals in the AFC, and Pierce is not shy about how he will approach doing so.
But stopping the future Hall of Famer is much easier said than done.
