Vikings' Justin Jefferson: Want to Break the Bank on Contract for Team that Wants Me

Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson offered a perhaps telling remark when it comes to his next contract.

On Mad Dog Sports Radio's Schein on Sports, the three-time Pro Bowler said he wants to "break the bank." In a remark that may have caught the attention of his current team, he added he wants "to be a part of an organization that wants me and to really give me what I deserve."

Jefferson did say he still expects the Vikings to do what's required to keep him around.

Jefferson's future in Minnesota looks uncertain. He's due to be a free agent in 2025 and all but assured of becoming the highest-paid wideout in the NFL when he signs a multiyear pact.

Spotrac values the 24-year-old at $29.3 million annually, but the inflationary nature of the market means he'll eclipse the $30 million Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill collects and then some.

The Vikings could apply the franchise tag to Jefferson when the time comes, but that would still be a sizable short-term commitment and just drive the cost of his next contract even higher.

If Minnesota wants to retain the 6'1" pass-catcher beyond 2024, this is the offseason to get something done. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah doesn't have to worry about any rival bidders, and there's a lot of runway to hammer out an agreement.

Conversely, now is the time to capitalize on Jefferson's trade value if Adofo-Mensah isn't sure whether paying Jefferson $30-plus million is a wise investment.

It's not a total coincidence that three of the four highest-paid receivers (Hill, Davante Adams and A.J. Brown) signed their current contracts after getting traded. To some degree, the jury remains out on whether committing that much of the salary cap to a wide receiver is worth it.

Brown was a key part of the Philadelphia Eagles winning the NFC in 2022. However, the Las Vegas Raiders have missed the playoffs in each of the last two years since acquiring Adams, and the Dolphins have experienced back-to-back Wild Card Round exits.

A great receiver is a nice luxury to have yet may not be an essential part of a Super Bowl-winning formula. That's something the Vikings are bound to consider with Jefferson.
