NFL Super Bowl 58 Referee Crew Revealed Featuring Bill Vinovich, Terry Killens
The NFL announced Bill Vinovich will be the referee for Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Feb. 11.
This is Vinovich's third go-round as a referee for the annual event. He led the crews for Super Bowls XLIX and LIV.
ESPN's Kevin Seifert noted how this is part of a wider trend:
The 63-year-old's appointment is good news for fans who want to see the game decided on the field with minimal intervention by the officiating crew.
According to Pro Football Reference, games with Vinovich as the main official have averaged 11.36 penalties this season. While that's 0.23 above the league average, he had thrown fewer flags than the league average for 11 straight years before that.
Granted, most fans might remember Vinovich most for a blown call in the playoffs. He was on duty for the NFC title game between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints when the refs missed an obvious pass interference on Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman.
Vinovich's most recent game was the Detroit Lions' 31-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC divisional round. The teams were whistled for a combined eight penalties totaling 50 yards.
