NBA Trade Rumors: Knicks, Rockets, Mavs Eye Wizards' Daniel Gafford, Hawks' Griffin

Jack MurrayJan 21, 2024

The New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets may be competing pretty hard at this season's NBA trade deadline.

Matt Moore of Action Network reported that the three franchises are all interested in Washington Wizards center Daniel Gafford as well as Atlanta Hawks forward A.J. Griffin.

Gafford is averaging 10.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists across 36 games for the Wizards in 2023-24. These have been the best statistics of his career, and this comes despite the Wizards stumbling to a 7-34 start to the season.

Griffin has had limited usage since the Hawks used the No. 16 pick on him in the 2022 NBA Draft. He has averaged 2.3 points across 16 games for Atlanta in 2023-24 but is still just 20-years-old with room for development.

The Knicks currently have the best postseason outlook of the three suitors as it sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The team has already been busy with changing the roster this season, with a trade for OG Anunoby being the highlight move thus far.

The Mavericks are also primed to make some noise this postseason, sitting in sixth place in the Western Conference. Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported that the team is really in the market for a small forward, which Griffin would fit well. He would be an excellent buy-low option if Dallas were to miss out on other available players and could be have some upward potential. The interest in Gafford comes from a desire to add another "available big," which is a mold that Gafford fills.

The Rockets are currently out of a playoff spot at 20-21 and sit in 11th place. Still, adding depth to the developing core and potentially making a run to the postseason could be something Gafford could help with while Griffin could get an opportunity to revitalize his career with Houston.

The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 8.
