NBA Rumors: Lauri Markkanen Trade Talks Rejected by Jazz; No Interest in Moving Star
The Utah Jazz are reportedly not looking to move All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen despite the fact that he has only one year left on his contract beyond this season.
According to ESPN's Zach Lowe, the Indiana Pacers called the Jazz about Markkanen before they completed a trade with the Toronto Raptors for Pascal Siakam this week, and the Jazz showed "zero interest" in trading Markkanen.
Utah's desire to keep Markkanen could have something to do with a better-than-expected record this season, as the Jazz are ninth in the Western Conference at 22-21, and have gone 9-2 over their past 11 games.

Markkanen was the No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, and he spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bulls, followed by one campaign as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
While the Finnish big man had his moments in Chicago and Cleveland, and showed the potential to be a dominant stretch four, he never broke out beyond being a complementary player.
The Jazz dealt All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell to the Cavs prior to the 2022-23 season, and they received a significant package of players and draft picks in return, including Markkanen.
Given the opportunity to truly be a featured player for the first time in his career, Markkanen reached new heights last season, averaging a career-high 25.6 points, 3.0 three-pointers made and 1.9 assists per game to go along with 8.6 rebounds.
Markkanen was named an All-Star for the first time in his career as a result, and he got to play the All-Star Game in front of his home fans in Salt Lake City.
The 26-year-old 7-footer is perhaps trending toward another All-Star nod this season with averages of 24.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.2 three-pointers made and 1.9 assists per game, while shooting 49.8 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from beyond the arc.
With a nucleus of Markkanen, Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, John Collins, Walker Kessler, Keyonte George and others, the Jazz have a legitimate chance to be one of the most surprising playoff teams this season.
There is some risk involved with keeping Markkanen since he could potentially leave in free agency after the 2024-25 season, but the Jazz have time to figure that situation out.
By hanging onto Markkanen, it gives the Jazz more time to work out a contract extension, or they could revisit trading him during the offseason or at some point next season.
Based on how well Markkanen is performing and the unique dimension he brings to the table as a 7-footer who can shoot, the offers should only get better for him moving forward.
