Australian Open 2024 Results: Instant Reactions to Monday's Winners and Losers
Coco Gauff's quest for her second Grand Slam title got off to a terrific start on Monday.
The 19-year-old American, who won the U.S. Open last September, lost just three games in her first-round match at the 2024 Australian Open.
Gauff is expected to make a deep run in the women's singles draw to earn her best result in Melbourne. She has not gotten past the fourth round in the Australian Open singles draw in her career.
Gauff's dominance headlined a wide-open day of play in the women's singles bracket. Seven seeded players were upset in their first-round matches.
Naomi Osaka was not one of the unseeded players to knock off a ranked female, as she fell in straight sets to Caroline Garcia in her return to Melbourne.
Monday's play finished with one of what could be many five-set epics in Melbourne, as Felix Auger-Aliassime survived a comeback attempt from Dominic Thiem in a match that lasted just under five hours.

Coco Gauff Looks Strong in First Grand Slam Match as Major Champion
2 of 4
Gauff was in full control for the hour she was on court on Monday.
The fourth-seeded American only lost three games to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and she shut out the Russian in the second set.
The straight-set dominance was exactly what Gauff needed to kick off her 2024 Grand Slam campaign.
Gauff entered Melbourne with higher expectations than ever because of her U.S. Open title last fall.
Gauff and the other top-six seeds that have played so far in Melbourne set a high standard for the favorites to win the event.
No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka won in straight sets on Sunday and No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur did the same on Monday.
Top seed Iga Swiatek, No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula are all in action on Tuesday as first-round play wraps up.
Naomi Osaka Falls in Grand Slam Return
3 of 4
Osaka's Grand Slam return did not go as planned.
The four-time major champion fell in straight sets to No. 16 seed Caroline Garcia inside Rod Laver Arena.
Osaka pushed Garcia to a second-set tiebreak, but she was unable to force a third set against her French opponent.
Garcia was seen as a potentially susceptible opponent to an Osaka upset because she has not made it past the fourth round in Melbourne
Osaka admitted after the match there was some frustration for not advancing out of the first round, per ESPN.
"The competitive in me is really frustrated that I'm not winning these matches, of course," Osaka told a post-match news conference. "So I wouldn't say, like, this comeback is how I thought because I'm delusional enough to think I could have won the tournament."
All four of Osaka's major titles occurred at hard-court majors, so there was some expectation for her to be competitive in her return.
Felix Auger-Aliassime Survives Five-Set Epic
4 of 4
Felix Auger-Aliassime survived the match of the day against Dominic Thiem.
The 27th-seeded Canadian appeared to be on his way to an easy win after he won the first two sets.
However, the 2020 U.S. Open champion fought back to force a third and fourth set.
Auger-Aliassime regained control of the match in the fifth set and finished off the match just before it was about to hit the five-hour mark.
The first-round win over a previous major champion was huge for Auger-Aliassime's confidence after he was eliminated in the first round at three of the four majors last season.
Auger-Aliassime reached the fourth round in each of his last three trips to Melbourne, but he will face a tough task to reach that point again in 2024.
He is one win away from facing third-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the third round. He needs a quick second-round contest against French qualifier Hugo Grenier in order to be fully recovered to give Medvedev his best shot.
