Lakers' Austin Reaves, Wizards' Kyle Kuzma, NBA Stars Whose Trade Restrictions Lifted

Tyler ConwayJan 15, 2024

Trade season can now officially begin across the NBA.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves, Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant and Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma are among the names whose trade restrictions lifted Monday and could theoretically be on the move before next month's deadline.

Here is a list of players who fit the criteria, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks:

Of the names becoming trade-eligible Monday, Grant is the biggest name who has a realistic shot of being moved. The Blazers signed Grant to a five-year, $160 million deal in July that was frankly confusing from the moment it was announced.

With Damian Lillard unhappy and angling for a trade, it would have made more sense for Portland to allow Grant to walk and fully commit to the inevitable rebuild. Instead, the front office signed him to an above-market contract that it may already be looking to get out from under less than a year later. While he's a high-end 3-and-D player, the nature of Grant's contract will make finding trade value difficult.

The Wizards likewise signed Kuzma to a four-year, $90 million contract this offseason but could already be looking to move him as they sit among the NBA's worst teams. Kuzma is averaging a career-high 22.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game this season.

The Lakers have been linked to stars in the trade market—most notably Bulls guard Zach LaVine—but are steadfast in their desire to keep Reaves, who has not developed into a third co-star next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis but still has a ton of value. Hachimura is the more expendable of the two young players and likely would be made available if the right deal came along.

One of the reasons the Bulls could be willing to move LaVine is the emergence of White, who became trade-eligible Monday but will almost certainly be retained by Chicago. White has played by far the best basketball of his career this season, with his three-year, $36 million contract looking like one of the NBA's biggest bargains.

The remainder of the list is largely filled with young veteran role players who likely would be made available if the right trade came along but aren't actively being shopped.
