Knicks Rumors: Point Guard Depth Eyed Behind Jalen Brunson Amid Dejounte Murray Buzz
Amid trade buzz around Atlanta Hawks shooting guard Dejounte Murray, the New York Knicks could be looking to add some depth in the backcourt, according to Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer.
According to Fischer, the Knicks are eying a player that could bring some depth behind point guard Jalen Brunson, while also continually searching for depth in the frontcourt with center Mitchell Robinson out.
"New York is looking at various avenues to upgrade its point guard depth behind Jalen Brunson, sources said, while the Knicks also continue to evaluate center options because of Mitchell Robinson's ankle surgery," Fischer wrote.
Though New York might not be the right fit for Murray, Fischer noted, as he's looking for a different situation than he has with the Hawks, playing alongside a ball-dominant guard in Trae Young. Playing for the Knicks, Murray would be in a similar situation that he is in with Atlanta.
The Knicks have already been active in the trade market this season, dealing RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley to the Toronto Raptors for OG Anunoby in December. In his five games with the Knicks, Anunoby has put up 14.2 points and five rebounds per game, also notching 1.4 steals per game.
While the addition of Anunoby could help the Knicks get over the hump — they currently sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference — getting some depth in the backcourt is still a priority.
If the Knicks do end up dealing with Atlanta, Fischer noted that the Hawks had interest in shooting guard Quentin Grimes in 2022 during a trade that sent Cam Reddish to Atlanta.
"Of note: When Atlanta and New York discussed the 2022 trade that brought Cam Reddish to the Knicks, the Hawks valued Quentin Grimes during those talks, sources said," Fischer wrote.
Perhaps Grimes' value to the Hawks could end up paying dividends in a potential trade.
