Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton Carried off Floor with Hamstring Injury; Will Undergo MRI
The Indiana Pacers potentially suffered a devastating loss early in Monday's game against the Boston Celtics.
Per Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix, star point guard Tyrese Haliburton was carried off the floor by teammates after slipping and appearing to injure his hamstring. Haliburton had a towel over his head and appeared to be "in considerable pain." The team announced that he suffered a left hamstring strain. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported Haliburton would undergo an MRI Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.
Haliburton suffered the injury in the second quarter. He played 13 minutes and had seven points, six assists and two rebounds before exiting the game. Without the 23-year-old floor general, the Pacers will have to rely on point guards T.J. McConnell and Andrew Nembhard to pick up the slack.
Haliburton entered the game averaging 24.2 points, a league-high 12.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals. He received the most fan votes among Eastern Conference guards in the first return of this season's All-Star balloting.
Thanks to Haliburton's hot start, the Pacers entered Monday with a 20-15 record, which ranks seventh in the East. Indiana leads the NBA in scoring at 126.8 points per game and has eight players who average over 10 points.
If Haliburton is forced to miss extended time, it would be a major blow to the Pacers' chances of staying afloat in the competitive Eastern Conference. The team ranks 29th in the league in scoring defense at 124.2 points allowed per game. It could be tough for Indiana's offense to keep up without Haliburton leading the way.
Following Wednesday's game against the Washington Wizards, the Pacers will embark on a six-game road trip. Haliburton's absence will make it a tough stretch for Indiana.
