76ers' Patrick Beverley: Joel Embiid on Pace to Have 'Greatest Season' in NBA History
A second straight Most Valuable Player Award may not be enough to put Joel Embiid's season in perspective if he maintains his current pace, at least in the eyes of Philadelphia 76ers teammate Patrick Beverley.
Beverley said on his podcast that Embiid's campaign "would be the greatest season of a single player that's ever played basketball" (warning: video contains profanity). He added the 7'0" center "is the most dominant player in basketball right now and it's not even close."
Beverley is obviously a bit biased since he shares a locker room with Embiid, and broadly it's tough to compare individual seasons across eras. But the Sixers star is on track to have a year that could be discussed in historic terms.
Through 26 games, Embiid is averaging a league-best 34.8 points along with 11.8 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.0 blocks. He's also shooting 35.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, is third in the Eastern Conference (23-10) and has the highest net rating (10.4) in the league, per NBA.com. Many wondered whether the drama surrounding James Harden and his subsequent trade would send the franchise into a bit of a spiral. Instead the 76ers are thriving.
And Embiid is at the center of it all. His 38.1 percent usage rate is both a career high and the highest in the NBA, per Basketball Reference.
Others, most notably Tyrese Maxey, deserve credit for Philly's success. But many were curious to see how Embiid would respond after another disappointing playoff exit and the Harden trade. Right now, he looks like a man on a mission.
