Buying or Selling Latest on Omos, Logan Paul's Next Feud, More WWE Rumors

Chris RolingDec 30, 2023

There wasn't much of a lull over the holidays for the pro wrestling rumor mill like more traditional years.

Like normal years, though, it's only going to speed up from here.

After all, WWE's now charging downhill toward the Royal Rumble, where the company has yet to reveal huge non-rumble matches for Superstars such as Logan Paul.

It also doesn't hurt to mention that CM Punk just had his first in-ring match for WWE since his return at a special event over the holidays. Fittingly, there's a rumor on the mill about the circumstances around that match beyond just how eye-popping the attendance numbers were for the event.

Given the amount of buzz, let's take a step back, identify the most attention-worthy and offer advice on whether fans should buy or sell on each item.

Logan Paul's Next Feud

1 of 5

Given the (amazing) logjam at the top of the main-event scene right now, it doesn't feel like the right time for Logan Paul to go win a rumble and chase a top title.

Notable, then, is a report from Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats) that says Paul's in line for a big feud with Kevin Owens and a match at the event.

It's a perfect buy and a near-perfect fit for the PLE. The two are a dream fit for a high-profile feud based on the promos they will cut alone, nevermind the in-ring payoff. And Owens is a marquee "stopgap" feud before Paul moves on to something potentially even bigger at WrestleMania itself.

If it feels like WWE's is just going down the list of borderline dream matches for Paul, that's a luxury the company rightfully enjoys, which helps the fans feast, too.

Verdict: Buying

No Pitches for Omos?

2 of 5

Fans haven't seen much of Omos lately and when they do, it's at mini-events where he's facing the likes of R-Truth.

According to Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), that's essentially a sign of things to come for right now, as there just haven't been many pitches for him backstage within WWE at the moment.

But it feels like a sell, at least in the sense of WWE isn't working to find something for one of the most unique Superstars on the planet. Given how abundantly green Omos has been in the ring since his debut, there's little wrong with everything moving at a slow pace while he continues to develop—he's still just 29 years old.

Ideally, perhaps, would be WWE finding a mouthpiece for Omos interwined with a storyline that has him strictly focused on squashing opposition. One idea? Perhaps Omos has been waiting for the upcoming WWE Speed to really get a story and push.

Verdict: Selling

William Regal's Role

3 of 5

For many fans, the stance on William Regal since his return to WWE has likely been that they won't get to see him on actual broadcasts again.

But rumblings sure seem to hint otherwise.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Ortman), Regal's non-compete clause for appearing on television is almost at an end. Meaning, he could appear on WWE broadcasts again soon in some sort of authority role like he has in the past, despite the report noting that he's apparently had little interest in doing so.

Still, the idea of Regal getting back in front of the cameras is a super-easy buy. Given the way WWE has handled the likes of Nick Aldis as authority characters and general managers lately, it makes far too much sense not to happen.

And really, if we're going that far already, while Regal on NXT is great, one has to wonder if his talents might not be better used as an opposing brand's general manager to square off with Aldis and really give some of those cross-brand competitions even more spice.

Verdict: Buying

Fans Left Big Event Early?

4 of 5

By now, every fan has probably heard of just how bonkers the arena was for Punk's first match back over the holiday at Madison Square Garden.

In an interesting twist though, Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t Ortman) noted that a "surprising" bit of the crowd actually left the event after Punk's match instead of finishing out the show.

On one hand, it is a busy holiday season. But on the other, it's hard to envision Punk is the type of draw who lures in fans who have no interest in the remainder of a show after coughing up the ticket price.

After Punk's match and a brief break, Cody Rhodes—one of most popular Superstars on the planet right now—took on Shinsuke Nakamura and Seth Rollins clashed with Drew McIntyre, so it's safe to presume those who showed up remained for main events.

Verdict: Selling

Mercedes Moné Drops Another Hint?

5 of 5

Right now, everything pointing to Mercedes Moné—formerly known as Sasha Banks—returning to WWE feels like an easy buy.

The latest is an apparent hint from Moné herself. As Wrestling News pointed out on social media, Moné shared an image of herself outside of the TD Garden on Instagram, the exact venue WWE hosted a live event at during the time.

While it's unclear if this was an old or current image, it certainly still feels like Moné is throwing these hints on purpose. If she was going to make a speculated AEW debut, it probably would have happened by now.

Her returning as Banks to WWE would make more sense, in part because like Punk, the company has changed seemingly for the better in many ways since her departure.
