Hypothetical Trades Cowboys Must Consider in 2024 NFL Offseason

Joe TanseyDec 13, 2023

The Dallas Cowboys have some interesting decisions to make in the offseason.

Running backs Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle, as well as offensive lineman Tyron Smith are set to become free agents, per Spotrac.

The Cowboys could go the cheap route at running back and use one of their draft picks on the position, but the 2024 running back class is not as strong as it has been in previous years.

Dallas may be forced to swing a trade for a premier running back if it is unable to re-sign Pollard.

The offensive line could be transformed as well with Smith and Tyler Biadasz both set to hit free agency.

Dallas would be better off looking for an offensive tackle in the first round of the draft, but it may also look for a veteran to protect Dak Prescott if it does not bring back Smith.

Deal with New Orleans for Alvin Kamara

This is more of a swing-for-the-fences idea than anything, but the potential acquisition of Alvin Kamara could upgrade the Dallas offense from the high level it is already playing at this season.

The New Orleans Saints do not seem to be making any progress toward a championship anytime soon.

Sure, the Saints are in the mix for the NFC South title this year, but the winner of that division is expected to lose to either the Cowboys or Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round.

Kamara may be antsy to play for a Super Bowl contender because his life span as a NFL running back could be running out.

The 28-year-old would come with a hefty price tag under his current contract, but that might be a risk the Cowboys are willing to take to make their offense as good as any team in the league.

Dallas would likely have to send a few draft picks back to New Orleans, and that potential price tag may make this more fantasy than reality, but it is worth a shot, especially if Pollard signs elsewhere in free agency.

Trade for Raheem Mostert

Raheem Mostert is an older but less expensive option to consider on the running back trade market.

The Miami Dolphins may be willing to make De'Von Achane their No. 1 running back in the offseason and that could limit carries for the 31-year-old Mostert.

Mostert showed throughout the season that he has not lost a step yet despite his age.

The Cowboys could send a Day 2 or 3 draft pick to Miami for Mostert, who is only scheduled to make $2.3 million next season, per Spotrac.

Dallas could replicate exactly what Miami is doing this season with Mostert and Achane.

The Cowboys could select a late-round running back and hope he develops under Mostert as they look to find their stars of the future.

Acquire Tristan Wirfs from Tampa Bay

The Cowboys could take a big swing on the offensive line trade market to secure the interior for years to come.

The easy solution for the Cowboys would be to re-sign Smith for a year or two and draft an offensive tackle in the first round.

The out-of-the-box wild hypothetical would be to call the Tampa Bay Buccaneers about Tristan Wirfs.

Wirfs has one year left on his contract, albeit an expensive one, but the Cowboys could be a draw to the 24-year-old left tackle because of their status in the NFC.

Dallas needs elite players at every position to keep up with the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, and one way to do it could be to ship a few draft picks in exchange for a left tackle who could start for the next 10 years.
