College Football Recruiting 2012: Shaq Thompson and Top Decommitments
The recruiting is all but finished, and with both the Under Armour All-American Game and U.S. Army All-American Bowl set to take place this week, we will see some top recruits finally commit.
Or commit again in some cases.
A number of players declared their allegiance for a program at some point or other in the last few years but have since backed out of that decision. By decommitting, these players have opened themselves up once more to one of the toughest decisions they'll ever make.
Here are some of the top players who have decommitted one school and are still working towards a decision.
Shaquille Thompson, DB
The 6'2", 210-pounder draws a 4-star grade from ESPN and a 5-star grade from Rivals. He originally committed to the California Golden Bears, but backed out of it about week later.
Many still believe that the Golden Bears are a likely destination for the California native, though. He officially visited Notre Dame, Arizona State and Oregon this fall.
Thompson has narrowed his choices down to Cal, USC and Washington.
His 40-yard dash is in the 4.4-4.5 second range, and he is arguably the top defensive back recruit in the country.
Arik Armstead, DL
At 6'8", 280 pounds, Armstead is a man amongst boys. He previously committed to USC where his brother, Armond, is currently playing, but opened things back up this fall.
The Trojans wanted Armstead to play offensive tackle, but he wants to play defensive end. He was timed around 5.1 in the 40-yard dash and has offers from almost every school in the country.
This fall, he officially visited with the Irish in South Bend, the Tigers in Auburn, Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Golden Bears in Berkeley and Ducks in Eugene.
Obviously, his size and physicality is highly sought-after, and whoever earns his signature will have worked for it.
Aziz Shittu, DT
The 6'3", 275-pound defensive tackle also has offers from nearly every school in the country as well, with the exceptions of Notre Dame and Oregon.
Shittu initially committed to Stanford, but ultimately decided he wasn't done with his recruitment process, and this fall he officially visited both Cal and Texas A&M.
He's not a dominating athlete with about a 5.2 in the 40-yard dash, but with his size, he's a quicker, more compact and powerful athlete than the previously mentioned Armstead.
Programs hope to turn him into a gap-penetrating, disruptive force from the inside at the next level.
Mike Davis, RB
The long-time Florida commit of over a year broke it off with the Gators in early December. Whatever the reason doesn't matter much now, and the 5'10", 200-pound back has a decision to make between almost every high profile southern school in the SEC and ACC.
Davis officially visited Florida State and Tennessee this fall and will visit Clemson, Georgia and South Carolina this month. He will decide among these five.
He is around 4.5 in the 40-yard dash and has a 34-inch vertical jump.
Davis rushed for over 1,900 yards and scored 21 touchdowns this season in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
