Michigan Football: Why It's Better for CFB That Michigan Won the Sugar Bowl
Michigan is one of the most storied programs in college football today. The Wolverines' rivalry with Ohio State is one of the greatest games of the season every year. In a "bold" move, the BCS lined the Wolverines up against Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl last night.
Michigan took the game to overtime and won it with a clutch field goal, and that is the better result for college football than a Virginia Tech win. Why, you ask?
Reason No. 1: In a down year, the Big Ten has faced some tough losses this bowl season. I don't want to live in a world where the ACC is better than the Big Ten in football. Michigan's win at least establishes some familiarity in the pecking order.
Reason No. 2: The win sets Denard Robinson up to be a season-opening Heisman contender, and that's good for the Big Ten and the Wolverines. With the season opener against Alabama in Cowboys Stadium, he will have an immediate opportunity to make his Heisman argument.
Reason No. 3: Michigan is a huge school with tons of fans that will travel hundreds of miles to attend a game. If fans don't show up to games, then the bowls will pay out less money in order to keep their profits about the same, right?
Reason No. 4: Frank Beamer's top-five bowl record with the Hokies is 2-6 as of last night and Michigan's win restored the natural order. Michigan should come out in the post-bowl rankings above Tech now, and that just makes good sense for football fans.
Reason No. 5: The BCS has plenty of opportunity to use real results to fine-tune their computer programming. With so many close games this postseason, there can be tweaking in the offseason to make the computers more accurate. If the computers are made a little more accurate every year, everyone wins.
Michigan is a powerhouse that has had a fall from the top. It will be back. Michigan is not gone forever. Take it from someone who knows about waiting—an Alabama fan. Michigan will have its time again, and Brady Hoke may just be the answer for the Wolverines.
