Aaron Rodgers Admits Matt Flynn Likely Leaving Green Bay Packers After Season

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Matt Flynn's record-breaking performance for the Green Bay Packers in Week 17 was the talk of the NFL, and it seemed to set the backup quarterback up for a big payday when he hits free agency. Aaron Rodgers even said as much during an interview on 540 ESPN Radio on Tuesday.

The Packers had to know Flynn was likely to leave after this season anyway after he made a strong impression when Rodgers was out with a concussion last year, and his 480-yard, six-touchdown performance against Detroit all but confirmed it.

Here is what Rodgers had to say when he was asked about Flynn's future and potentially re-signing with the Packers: “Not going to happen, I don’t think. Going into the game I think we maybe had a 50/50 shot; now I don’t know if we have any shot."

While Flynn is likely to be one of the highest-paid quarterbacks this offseason, I would caution teams to focus on the fact he has thrown just 132 passes in his career. And he has had the luxury of playing with skilled players like Jordy Nelson, Jermichael Finley, Donald Driver, et al.

Another factor teams should keep in mind when deciding whether or not to pursue Flynn is the defenses he has put numbers up against.

In 2010, he started against the New England Patriots, who ranked 30th in pass yards allowed. This year, the Lions were 22nd.

He obviously has talent, but is he really going to be as good as he has looked in his last two starts over a full 16-game season when teams have more film to look at?

Whatever happens with Flynn, it appears that it will not be happening in Green Bay.
