AEW Collision Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights from October 14

Doc-Chris MuellerOct 14, 2023

Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage and recap of AEW Collision on October 14.

This week was all about the TV titles in AEW as three different championships were defended on Saturday's show.

Samoa Joe put his ROH TV title on the line against Willie Mack, Christian Cage defended the TNT Championship against Bryan Danielson, and Skye Blue challenged Kris Statlander for the TBS title.

We also saw Ricky Starks take on Komander, and we heard from Adam Copeland in addition to getting a promo from the newly crowned AEW tag team champions, Ricky Starks and Big Bill.

Let's take a look at what happened on Saturday's episode of AEW Collision.

Opening Segment, Samoa Joe vs. Willie Mack

Adam Copeland kicked off the show with a promo in the ring, but he barely got two sentences into his speech before Christian Cage came out with a group of five security guards to protect him.

The TNT champion told his former fake brother that he wasn't welcome in AEW and he should leave before the guards made him leave. Bryan Danielson joined the party and informed him that Luchasaurus have been banned from ringside during the match.

Ricky Starks and Big Bill showed up and said everyone in the ring was taking time away from them. He said he respected Christian but not Danielson and Copeland. Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler made their way to the ring as it began to fill up like a Battle Royal.

The segment ended with Danielson attacking the security guards. The babyfaces sent the heels packing while The American Dragon held one of the guards in The LeBell Lock for a long time as he started at Christian with a smile.

This was certainly a good way to get a lot of people on the screen at the same time, but it felt like this segment lacked focus because it didn't know which storyline it wanted to address.

Grade: B

The first match of the night was for the ROH TV title. Samoa Joe faced off Mack to see who would get to take the belt back to ROH.

Joe usually has a significant size and power advantage over his opponents, but Mack was not like most men. He and Joe took turns trying to take each other down, but in the end, Joe won the exchange because he got a bigger running start for his shoulder tackle.

They continued to fight throughout the break. Joe usually had the upper hand, but Mack kept finding ways to make short comebacks to keep him on his toes.

Even though we didn't get a "Meat forever" chant, this is the kind of match when it would have been perfect. This was an entertaining encounter between two guys who are known for being able to do things most men their size shouldn't be able to do.

Joe suckered Mack into climbing to the top rope so he could hit him with the Muscle Buster to get the win and retain his ROH TV title.

Result: Samoa Joe defeated Willie Mack to retain the ROH Television Championship

Grade: B

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Why was just one of Cage's bodyguards in a suit? Was he the head guard? It was a weird juxtaposition.
  • This segment felt very bloated. Trying to address three storylines in a non-wrestling segment means none of them got the attention they deserved.
  • The video with MJF and Robert Kraft talking about the reality of dealing with antisemitism was well done.
  • Mack's arm-drag counter was nice.
  • Nipple twisters should be an automatic disqualification like a low blow. They hurt almost as much.

Christopher Daniels vs. Juice Robinson

2 of 6

Bullet Club Gold was out in full force this week as Juice Robinson took on Christopher Daniels.

Daniels is a seasoned veteran who has beaten a lot of big names in his career, but at this stage in his career, he is putting people over a lot more than he is winning.

This bout was designed to give Robinson a hard-fought win over a skilled opponent. Having BCG at ringside gave Robinson the edge, but they did a good job keeping their involvement to a minimum so the match wasn't dominated by interference and nonsense.

Both men gave a decent performance, but it felt like they were stuck in second gear and never quite knew how to kick it into third. Robinson got the win without much help from his friends, which was a nice change of pace.

Result: Juice Robinson defeated Christopher Daniels

Grade: C+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Tony Schiavone has been much spicier on commentary than usual lately.
  • Some people just have one of those smiles that makes you want to walk on the opposite side of the street to avoid them. Robinson is one of those people.
  • Jay White getting down on one knee to give Robinson a diamond ring was funny. Apparently, he got it from TJ Maxx on sale.

Kyle Fletcher vs. Boulder

Boulder from The Iron Savages and Kyle Fletcher from Aussie Open stepped into the ring for a singles match this week.

Boulder asserted his dominance right away by pushing Fletcher to the mat during their first lockup, so the 24-year-old sensation tried to put him in a headlock.

Fletcher was able to counter some mounted strikes with an impressive powerbomb before putting him in the Dragon Sleeper to score a quick win.

This match wasn't much, but Fletcher looked good getting a victory over a guy who looks like he eats guys named Kyle for breakfast.

Result: Kyle Fletcher made Boulder submit

Grade: C

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Boulder's gorilla press slam looked good. A lot of people who try that move can never quite get it right, but he had Fletcher balanced in the air perfectly.
  • Fletcher's suicide dive looked like it fell a little short of the mark, but Boulder sold it to make it look good. Showing the replay from a different angle made the move look a little better.
  • Billy Gunn and Anthony Bowens were shown giving Max Caster some advice for how to get MJF.

Kris Statlander vs. Skye Blue

The TBS Championship was on the line this week when Statlander put the belt on the line against Blue.

Statlander made good use of her strength to control the pace until Blue used a neckbreaker through the ropes to take her down.

The champion began to build up a head of steam right when we returned from a commercial break, but the 24-year-old challenger regained control and started to show some frustration.

Blue jumped off the top rope right into Statlander's waiting arms so the champion could deliver a slam.

After taking an onslaught of high-impact moves from the challenger, Statlander scored the win to retain her TBS title in a great performance.

Result: Kris Statlander pinned Skye Blue to retain the TBS title

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Blue's makeup has been getting darker with every match and the announcers are making note of it. She isn't smiling as much or acting as happy as she used to.
  • Statlander's blue thunder bomb had an awkward landing for Blue.
  • The crowd was really getting into this match the longer it went.
  • Statlander offered a handshake after the match but Blue waved it away.
  • Fletcher called out Kenny Omega for a match on Dynamite during a backstage segment.

Samoa Joe vs. Turbo Floyd, Bryan Danielson vs. Christian Cage

Keith Lee had a quick match this week against a man with one of the greatest names ever, Turbo Floyd. The Limitless one self-imposed a time limit on this match and won in less than a minute.

Result: Keith Lee pinned Turbo Floyd

Grade: Incomplete

Danielson made his entrance for the main event with 28 minutes left in the show, so he and Cage were given a lot of time to work.

The American Dragon is usually the more technically sound competitor in the ring, but Cage showed him early in the match that he was facing someone who was more experienced and just as aggressive.

Both of these men are north of 40 and they worked at the kind of pace you would expect from two competitors who were 10 years younger. Once Cage began to focus on Danielson's weak arm, the pace slowed a bit and the champion became more methodical with his offense.

This wasn't the first time these two have locked horns, but their last one-on-one match was in 2013, so it was nice to see their chemistry was still strong.

After Big Bill distracted the ref, Ricky Starks hit Danielson so Cage could take control and get the win. This led to an all-out brawl with Copeland, FTR and a few others getting involved to end the show in chaos.

Result: Christian defeated Bryan Danielson to retain the TNT title

Result: Grade: A-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Does anyone know when the mullet came back in style? Also, does anyone know how the mullet came back in style? It seemed like we killed it for good but it somehow survived.
  • Miro and CJ Perry both had videos this week. Perry was shown being approached by Action Andretti, and then Miro was shown beating up Andretti a little bit to show he didn't want anyone using Perry as a manager.
  • The way Danielson was selling his injured arm was so convincing. He really looked like he was in excruciating pain.
  • Cage's hurricanrana reversal into a sunset flip was a nice counter. That's one of those spots that is easy to screw up.

The Final Word

6 of 6

This week's Collision was bookended by segments that included Cage, Copeland, Danielson, Wayne, Luchasaurus, FTR, Starks and Big Bill. With the opening segment lasting nearly 20 minutes and the main event having almost 30, nearly half of this week's show was devoted to featuring these men.

Between those two segments, the best thing we saw this week was Statlander's TBS title defense against Blue. Both women made sure they got the crowd invested in their performance, and the possibility of a heel turn for Blue has made her character a lot more interesting.

Samoa Joe and Mack had a good showing, but it was just another in a long list of examples of ROH titles being defended on AEW TV instead of ROH's weekly show.

This week's episode of Collision was a brisk two hours, but there were definitely a couple of segments along the way that felt like filler.
