NFL Playoff Predictions: Offenses Ready for Playoff Takeoff

Timothy RappJan 3, 2012

The Denver Broncos and Tim Tebow are primed for an offensive explosion against the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend.

Haha, I had you there for a second, huh? In reality, it would be impressive if the Denver Tebows managed a field goal. But which offenses are primed for an offensive explosion that you might not expect? Anyone can pick the Saints, Packers or Patriots for this.

But which three teams might surprise you?

New York Giants

The Giants can be maddeningly inconsistent, but when Eli Manning is clicking the G-Men can be difficult to defend. Seeing as the Giants scored the ninth-most points in the NFL this year (24.6 points per game) and passed for the fifth-most yards per game (295.9), a high offensive output isn't out of the question.

Against a Falcons team that ranks 20th against the pass (236.6 yards per game), the Giants should find success with their aerial attack. Of course, that doesn't mean I think they'll beat the Falcons ...

Atlanta Falcons

... Because I think the Falcons will have even more of an offensive eruption than New York and win. The Falcons average 25.1 points (seventh in the NFL) and 376.6 yards per game (10th in the NFL), and the Giants defense has been generous all season, allowing 25 points (25th) and 376.4 yards per game (27th).

After beating the Giants, I predict the Falcons will face the Packers and their flimsy defense. Green Bay will ultimately outscore the Falcons, but not before the league's worst defense in terms of yardage allowed (411.6 yards per game) allows the Falcons to move up and down the field at will.

Baltimore Ravens

Ultimately, I think the Patriots will beat the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. And ultimately, I think Baltimore will lose that game because of Joe Flacco's failure to lead his team to victory late against New England.

But I do believe Flacco and the Ravens will put up points in the playoffs, even if they find themselves in a divisional-round clash against their hated rivals from Pittsburgh. Remember, this is a Baltimore team that has already put up 35 and 23 points against the Steelers.

Plus, if they do find themselves playing the Patriots, the Ravens should have no problem moving the ball against the league's 31st-ranked defense (411.1 yards per game).

However, this would make it all the more depressing if they were to lose to the Patriots.
