Miami Hurricanes Football: Where Are They Now? Ken Dorsey

Bleacher ReportJun 7, 2018

When you think of all the great quarterbacks that played at the college level, not many had a career quite as good as Ken Dorsey.

Dorsey came to Miami in 1999 after a successful high school career for the Miramonte Matadors (Orinda, Calif.) where he threw for 4,968 yards and 52 touchdowns in two years as starting quarterback.

During his freshman campaign at Miami, Dorsey played in six games, starting three of them.

He continued to develop and was given the starting role his sophomore season as the previous starter, Kenny Kelly, opted to play baseball instead.

In all honesty, Dorsey would have beat the senior out for the position anyway as he was a much better quarterback than Kelly.

What Dorsey did the rest of his college career is simply incredible.

In 40 career starts, Dorsey went 38-2.  During those three-plus years he lead the Hurricanes to a 34-game winning streak which included a bowl victory over Florida and a national championship victory over Nebraska in 2001.

He broke 11 Miami Hurricane passing records and another five Big East conference passing records.

Dorsey was also honored multiple times throughout his career which included being a two-time finalist for the Heisman Award and a Maxwell Award winner (National Player of the Year).

He was listed on many All-American teams, was a two-time Big East Offensive Player of the Year winner and was a three-time First-Team All Big-East selection.

Even with an impressive college career, Dorsey didn't get drafted until the seventh round of the 2003 draft by the San Fransisco 49ers.

He went on to start 10 games in the two years at San Fransisco but never panned out and was released after the 2005 season.

The Cleveland Browns ended up with Dorsey where he would get just three starts in three seasons. He was released by the Browns after the 2008 season.

It was the last time he played in the NFL and he ended with 2,082 yards, eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions.  He won just two games as a starting quarterback.

After his NFL career was over, Dorsey was picked up by the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football league for the 2010 season where he was a backup quarterback.

Dorsey finally called it quits on his professional football career in May, 2011.

His next venture was becoming a quarterbacks coach for the IMG Madden Football Academy, which is an invite-only football camp that has been compared to an NFL mini-camp.

He continued to work for IMG but on August 15th of this year he was hired on by the Carolina Panthers to be an advanced scout.

Dorsey will be going to college football games to scout out the talent and then report his findings to the Panthers.

Newton is a lock for the 2011 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Although Dorsey never made it as an NFL quarterback, he will always go down as not only the best Miami Hurricane quarterback of all-time, but one of my choices as the best college quarterback to ever play.

(This is a part of my "Miami Hurricanes: Where are they now?" weekly series that consists of my personal favorite Hurricanes since 1984 when I first started watching Miami. This will continue during the offseason.)
