Dodgers' Top Prospects, Farm System Progress Report, Draft Targets

Joel ReuterJun 8, 2023

The Los Angeles Dodgers have done as well as any team in baseball over the last decade identifying and developing high-level talent, and this year is no different. Rookies Bobby Miller, Miguel Vargas, James Outman, Michael Grove, Gavin Stone and Michael Busch are all seeing significant time in the majors.

Even with so much young talent arriving in the majors, the farm system is still stocked with more future impact players.

Last year's top draft pick, Dalton Rushing, and teenagers Josue De Paula and Thayron Liranzo represent the next wave of top-tier prospect talent. The Dodgers remain one of the most active teams in the sport on the international market, too.

Let's take a closer look at the Dodgers' current top-10 prospect list, a general overview of the farm system and who might be on their radar when they are on the clock in the 2023 draft.

The Dodgers took the No. 2 spot in our most recent farm system rankings, which were updated on May 25.

Right-hander Bobby Miller has not exceeded prospect eligibility limits and sits in the No. 1 spot on their top prospect list, but all signs point to him being in the majors for good given his stellar debut. The 24-year-old is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 17 innings over his first three MLB starts.

On the flip side, catcher Diego Cartaya is off to a rocky start at Double-A, hitting .210/.306/.406 with a 30.6 percent strikeout rate in 37 games. Still only 21 years old, he remains one of the team's most promising prospects.

Keep an eye on Thayron Liranzo (44 G, 193 PA, .253/.373/.556, 14 HR, 35 RBI at Single-A) and Jorbit Vivas (52 G, 231 PA, .295/.400/.472, 21 XBH, 23 RBI at Double-A) as two prospects who are rapidly climbing up the organizational rankings.

Potential Draft Targets

The Dodgers do not have a first-round pick in the 2023 MLB draft. Their first selection was moved back 10 slots from No. 26 to No. 36 overall as a result of exceeding the luxury-tax threshold by more than $40 million, so they'll have to be calculated in their strategy.

They faced the same penalties last year and walked away with Louisville catcher Dalton Rushing at No. 40 overall. He has quickly played his way onto leaguewide Top 100 lists, so there is plenty of value to be had even without a first-round selection.

One approach could be to take a flier on an injured player with first-round upside, such as Texas right-hander Tanner Witt. The 6'5", 225-pound right-hander has electric stuff, but he has pitched only 20.2 innings the last two seasons and just recently returned from Tommy John surgery.

A proven performer who has underperformed this spring could also be a good way to find some good value outside the first round.

Tennessee shortstop Maui Ahuna hit .396/.479/.634 as a sophomore last year at Kansas and looked like a lock for the first round, but he has posted a 30.4 percent strikeout rate this spring while making the jump to the SEC, although he's still batting .304/.423/.536 overall.
