2012 NFL Draft Order: Washington Redskins and 4 Teams on the Hunt for Stud QB

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

A few QB-starved franchises will be desperate to bring in a stud QB in the 2012 NFL Draft. This is a quarterback-driven league, and having an elite play-caller under center is tantamount to any franchise.

The following franchises are far from having that elite player under center, and they will do what they can to upgrade in this draft.

Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins were quarterbacked by Rex Grossman and John Beck this season. That is not good enough. Now is the time for Mike Shanahan to find the QB he his going to tie his Redskin career to.

Washington is drafting No. 6 in this draft, and that could leave them in an excellent position to draft Robert Griffin III. After the No. 1 spot, which will be Andrew Luck, every team that drafts before them has a young QB in place.

They will have to worry about a team trading up in front of them to land this year's Heisman winner and also the Browns deciding that Colt McCoy is not the answer, though.

There is also the possibility that the Redskins aren't sold on Griffin—or that Griffin will stay at Baylor for his senior season—and may trade down and then target a more traditional pocket passer like Ryan Tannehill. Or maybe they will mortgage their future drafts and try to swing a trade for the right to draft Andrew Luck.

Whatever they do, they will be targeting a QB.

The Miami Dolphins have been searching for a stud QB this entire millennium. Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season, and the Dolphins have yet to find the answer under center.

QB Matt Moore was decent for the Dolphins down the stretch, but he is clearly not the long-term answer this franchise is desperate for. The problem is that Matt Moore played well enough to lead the Dolphins out of position to draft a QB in the first round.

This team is either going to have to target someone later in the draft, trade up or wait until next year.

QB Tarvaris Jackson exceeded the expectations of many in his first season in Seattle. Unfortunately, that was largely because those expectations were terribly low.

Jackson was far from being a disaster, but this 28-year-old is also far from being ideal—Jackson ended the season with a 79.2 QB rating.

The Seahawks have a young team, and they need to find a QB to grow with them. If they want to get one of the two elite QBs in this draft, they are going to have to trade up. They may also consider taking a chance on Oklahoma QB Landry Jones should he decide to go pro.

The Chiefs are in a good position to draft a QB they can bring along slowly. Matt Cassel is a decent QB, and he is under contract through the 2014 season.

Kansas City would be well served if Cassel didn't have to play out the full term of that contract. He is not good enough to take them deep into the playoffs.

The Chiefs can target a QB like Tannehill or Landry Jones, bring him in, and let him learn the ropes while Cassel holds down the fort.
