Seth Rollins Must Win World Heavyweight Title, Damian Priest's Moment, More Raw Takes

Kevin BergeApr 25, 2023

WWE Raw continues to build forward for the future of the company. The April 24 episode contained some big announcements and important build toward Backlash on May 6.

Triple H announced the return of the World Heavyweight Championship. It will be the new world title for the brand that does not draft Roman Reigns, with its inaugural winner crowned at Night of Champions on May 27.

Cody Rhodes continued to show his fire, calling out Brock Lesnar and defeating Finn Bálor. And Seth Rollins did his best to build a quick feud with Omos in a promo with MVP.

Damian Priest tried to make a statement against Rey Mysterio but instead faced an enraged Bad Bunny, who challenged him to a Street Fight at Backlash in Puerto Rico.

Latino World Order continue to lose big matches, this time falling to The Bloodline. Santos Escobar, Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro have not been able to pick up any major wins lately.

The red brand put on another solid show, setting the stage for some big events to come.

WWE Fumbles World Heavyweight Title Announcement

1 of 4

After a year of Roman Reigns carrying both the WWE and Universal Championship, Triple H finally made the announcement that would bring back two separate world titles.

The Head of the Table seems unlikely to lose any time soon, and with a formal brand split on the horizon again, one of the brands will need its own top title.

However, WWE repeatedly missed opportunities to separate the world titles in an interesting way because it refused to let Reigns lose.

At this point, the World Heavyweight Championship is a consolation prize, especially considering its past legacy.

It was always the No. 2 world title next to the WWE Championship and will be won by someone who was not trusted to dethrone Reigns. The winner is, seemingly, only second best.

Plenty of wrestlers will benefit from the chance to win a world title. Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Bobby Lashley, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Drew McIntyre and others will get a fresh opportunity, even if they won't be the true world champion.

Seth Rollins Should Be Next World Heavyweight Champion, Not Cody Rhodes

While most would expect Cody Rhodes to win the World Heavweight Championship, that may not be the best option for The American Nightmare.

He lost to Roman Reigns when everyone believed he was ready to take the top spot. If he wins the other world title, it comes off as WWE saying he is lesser to The Head of the Table.

Rhodes' world title win without a strong story will lack dramatic weight, but WWE has a chance to use this new belt to keep building the story of his chase for the world championship.

Instead, this is a perfect time to crown Seth Rollins again. He is WWE's safest top guy outside of Reigns and can tell stories with everyone. The company trusts him enough to even throw him in a match with no build against Omos at Backlash.

As champion, he would be a target for multiple great contests, including an eventual final battle with Rhodes.

If WWE plays its cards right, Rhodes dethroning Rollins will mean much more than winning his first opportunity at the secondary gold.

WWE Stumbles on Gold With LWO Faction

Santos Escobar has always been an important piece in WWE but has struggled to take the big step. Legado del Fantasma never quite took over NXT, and WWE has rebranded them as Latino World Order on the main roster.

This rebrand should have allowed Escobar, Joaquin Wilde, Cruz Del Toro and Zelina Vega to rise up the ranks. Instead, they have played the role of punching bags to The Judgment Day.

Moreover, the group has become far too focused on protecting Rey Mysterio over advancing on either brand. LWO are popular, and the talent involved have huge potential.

Escobar could easily be challenging for the Intercontinental or United States Championship, and Wilde and Del Toro are a top tag team in waiting.

Vega is the only one immediately in line for a title opportunity, though, as she will face Rhea Ripley at Backlash. But she has no chance at the moment because she can barely get real TV time.

WWE is missing the potential of LWO, and time will show that. Hopefully, the stable won't be forgotten by the time the talent is truly needed.

Backlash is Damian Priest's Chance to Emerge From Judgment Day Shadow

4 of 4

Damian Priest has fallen far in the ranks of The Judgment Day. He was Edge's first recruit to the group at WrestleMania 38, but each new recruit has taken a spot ahead of him.

The Archer of Infamy was the only member of the group not to compete at WrestleMania 39. Even Dominik Mysterio has passed him in terms of crowd attention.

Priest remains immensely talented, though. Finn Bálor may have a greater pedigree, but The Archer of Infamy can compete at the same level as the Irishman when it matters.

There is a reason he has been consistently used to help Bad Bunny along. WWE has put serious trust in him by making his match with the singer a one-on-one Street Fight rather than the expected tag team bout involving Rey and Dominik Mysterio.

If Priest can help Bad Bunny put together one of the best celebrity matches in WWE history as he did as a tag team partner, he should finally get a chance to step out of the shadow of his Judgment Day cohorts.
