1 Word to Describe Every WWE Men's and Women's Champion Right Now
WrestleMania 39 is officially in the books, which means WWE can kick off a new season of programming. The Showcase of the Immortals usually wraps up the biggest storylines from the following year and reveals the champions for the upcoming months.
For the most part, the company is in a great position heading into the summer with a tremendous group of flagbearers to represent each division. However, it's hard to deny that there is a need for some fresh matchups and new faces at the top of the card.
Hopefully, the WWE draft will help to remedy this situation, but it's also time to shake up the world title picture in a major way. Roman Reigns has been an excellent champion, but his current schedule and the lack of a main event scene on Raw have become an unavoidable issue.
Nevertheless, let's take a look at every men's and women's champion and try to best describe them with one word following the biggest event of the year.
Becky Lynch and Lita: Encouraging
1 of 7The WWE women's tag division has lacked direction for far too long. For that reason, Becky Lynch and Lita have been encouraging as the current champions.
That may be a word that sounds a bit too optimistic given the company's track record with the women's tag titles. However, it's a good sign that a legitimate household name and a Hall of Famer are holding the belts because it will give them more exposure.
Yes, it's equally concerning that the two didn't defend the mantle at WrestleMania for the first time since WWE established them in 2019. Nevertheless, it seems like Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler are preparing to eventually challenge for the titles, and the division could use more high-profile stars like them.
Bianca Belair: Historic
2 of 7Bianca Belair has been on a historic run with the Raw women's title. In March, The EST of WWE became the longest-reigning Black singles champion in the history of the company.
The 33-year-old is now a month away from shattering Becky Lynch's record for the longest consecutive tenure as Raw women's champion. Belair has also cemented her legacy on The Grandest Stage of Them All.
She has gone undefeated in her last three appearances at the event and produced a series of impressive performances under the bright lights. Yes, WWE should use her in better storylines or give her some meaningful character development as well.
Regardless, she will undeniably inspire a new generation of Black fans and potential superstars for years to come.
Austin Theory: Defiant
3 of 7Austin Theory has been a defiant United States champion. His controversial win over John Cena at WrestleMania 39 may not have convinced some of his loudest critics that he is the next big thing.
After all, the match gave him the chance to stop taking shortcuts and earn a signature moment. Instead, the Atlanta native cheated to defeat his idol in a derivative finish that left much to be desired.
Nevertheless, this role suits Theory. It's much better than his run with the Money in the Bank briefcase or his stint with Mr. McMahon.
Rhea Ripley: Auspicious
4 of 7The SmackDown women's division has been pretty underwhelming for months. The brand desperately needed a new champion and a renewed focus.
To that end, Rhea Ripley is a promising addition to the blue brand. The Eradicator is hotter than she has ever been on the main roster, and she has improved leaps and bounds over the past three years.
Her WrestleMania rematch with Charlotte Flair was a nice way to give her the career-defining win in front of a massive crowd that eluded her in 2020. It finally feels like the Aussie is back on track and ready to grow into the superstar she was destined to be.
Gunther: Distinguished
5 of 7Gunther has been a revelation for SmackDown. His dominant run as the reigning intercontinental champion has reinvigorated WWE's workhorse title.
The Intercontinental Championship feels prestigious again thanks to The Ring General and his conventional approach to wrestling. The Austrian doesn't focus on spectacle or flashy moves.
Instead, he just lays waste to his opponents with a practical moveset and produces bangers with the best the WWE roster has to offer. His last title defense against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre was one of the best matches of WrestleMania weekend. Whoever eventually dethrones him will be a huge deal.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens: Gratifying
6 of 7Sami Zayn was the breakout star of 2022. His reunion with his longtime friend, Kevin Owens, to take down The Bloodline was the best story heading into WrestleMania 39.
The Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship match was the perfect way to end Night 1 of the event and offer a satisfying ending to this storyline. As such, Zayn and Owens secured the most gratifying title win of the weekend.
Their tribute to PWG and The Briscoes was the cherry on top of an incredible moment and the start of a new chapter for the duo.
Roman Reigns: Vexing
7 of 7Roman Reigns is undoubtedly producing the best character work and matches of his career, but his run as the undisputed WWE universal champion is getting stale.
That may seem harsh, but most of his title defenses for the past year have ended the exact same way. The constant interference and disqualifications are supposed to encourage us to boo The Tribal Chief and raise anticipation for his eventual fall from grace. But this formula has grown tired and boring.
Cody Rhodes was the best option to defeat Reigns and end his reign of terror. Instead, The Head of the Table survived an exceptional match with yet another derivative finish.
Reigns is a generational star, and this isn't an indictment on him as a performer or The Bloodline. It would be easy to say this is just a knee-jerk reaction to the baffling ending of Night 2 of WrestleMania 39, but this has been apparent for some time.
His matches at Crown Jewel, Clash at the Castle and Elimination Chamber all ended similarly. This isn't an attempt to minimize Reign's monumental run; it's a plea to WWE to do something else. Please, do something new with this character and the world titles.
