WWE WrestleMania 39 Results: Lesnar vs. Omos and Bouts That Exceeded Expectations
Every year at WrestleMania, there are a few matches that exceed expectations and become some of the most enjoyable of the weekend.
They are often undervalued by the creative team and underrated by fans heading into The Showcase of the Immortals but then surprise with their quality. And the 2023 iteration of the marquee event was no different.
On the heels of WrestleMania 39, here are four matches that were better than anyone thought they would be.
Brock Lesnar vs. Omos
1 of 4For a match that lasted just over five minutes, Brock Lesnar vs. Omos was shockingly good; far better than it had any right to be.
Much of that can be attributed to the fact that Lesnar bumped so much for The Nigerian Giant, even allowing himself to be thrown around the ring to put over the strength and size disadvantage he had.
When the time came to explode back into the contest, The Beast Incarnate took Omos to Suplex City before downing him with the F-5.
The match was the perfect length and wasn't dragged down by the lumbering offense of the relatively inexperienced Omos, and it gave fans the opportunity to pop in a big way alongside Lesnar's comeback.
Sometimes, shorter is better, and the opener of WrestleMania Sunday proved as much.
Men's WrestleMania Showcase Match
2 of 4On paper, the men's WrestleMania Showcase match was a throwaway affair, existing solely to get all eight men on the card. In execution, it was one of the more pleasant surprises of the weekend.
The Street Profits, Viking Raiders, Braun Strowman and Ricochet, and Alpha Academy made the most of their 8 minutes and 30 seconds, delivering an action-packed bout that had fans on their feet.
Ricochet and Chad Gable, in particular, showed out by highlighting their athleticism and, in the latter's case, remarkable strength.
The Chaos Theory from the Olympian to Strowman was one of the most impressive spots of the entire 'Mania weekend.
The Street Profits took home the victory, but all four teams exited the grandest stage better than they arrived, thanks to their ability to pack so much into such a short period of time.
Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio
3 of 4There was no denying that Rey and Dominik Mysterio had one of the hottest and best storylines entering WrestleMania.
The father-son family feud captivated audiences and resulted in one of the most must-see matches of the entire card at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
There was real uncertainty over the overall quality of the contest beforehand, though.
Dominik is still learning the ropes in WWE. He may be three years into his career and had a lot of ring time in that period, but there is still much for him to absorb. What he does have, though, is an understanding of his character and that helps make up for a lot.
From his entrance to the disrespect of his sister and mother at ringside to the way he carried himself while laying into his dad, the 26-year-old was fantastic.
He carried his end while Rey made sure everything went smoothly, and the result was a match that had the fans hanging on every spot.
Thanks also to the heat it carried, the match became one of the instant highlights of Night 1.
Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley
4 of 4It may seem odd to put Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley on this list given that most expected a great contest, but it is safe to say no one expected it to be a Match of the Year candidate.
The two women beat the life out of each other in a physical battle that could have gone either way in the end.
Ripley would not be denied, though, and put The Queen away with a Riptide from the top rope.
Flair was more engaged and motivated than she has been in two years. Maybe she was peeved that the match did not headline Saturday's broadcast or perhaps she felt disrespected by the attention paid to her opponent.
Whatever the case may be, she was as good as she has ever been and that is some statement given the quality of her work over the years.
Ripley recognized the enormity of the moment and turned in the best performance of her young career. Considering how great she was, it's wild to think the Australian is still just 26 years of age.
For a match that had little in the way of real creative behind it, it benefited from a red-hot crowd and featured two defining performances by women destined to go down in the annals of WWE as being among the greatest of all time.
A stellar match, arguably the best of the weekend, and a genuine star-maker for Ripley.
